I want to buy a good camera for my husband who likes to shoot lots of family pictures and our kids sports, baseball, football, volleyball, etc. My dilemma is which camera would be best the Canon 6D or the 7D. Some of my friends say there are rumors that a new 7D is scheduled to be released soon. So should I wait for the 7D or should I buy the 6D or the present 7D. Your guidance and information is always much appreciated. Thanks.

I have the 6D, its strong points are portraits, landscape, low light w/o flash. With care it does well at sports and action. The 7D is designed for action etc. The new version of the 7D is better at low light than the old according to early reviews. A good compromise might be the 70D which also is outstanding at video.

Thanks. I'll have to look that camera up since I know nothing about it. Thanks for your insights.

The 7d markII would be a great camera for his interests. It can be pre-ordered now, if you did not want to wait the 7d would also work. For indoor sports or night games outdoor you might want to wait for the 7d markII as it is supposed to be able to shoot at a higher ISO.

The rumors are true, the Canon 7D Mark II can be preordered, and I think it might be the best choice, though it would help to see more reviews and testing done on it. The 7D is cheaper, and the 6D has a full frame sensor which should do a little better at high ISO, but the 7D Mark II should easily have the best autofocus system.

If he is into shooting sports then the 70D, 7D, or 7DII, which was just announced, would be your best choices. The 7DII will almost certainly be the best choice of the 3 for sports, but it is also the most expensive. It can be pre-ordered but won't be available for delivery till Nov. The 7D is being phased out with the intro of the 7DII and can be had relatively cheaply. Very good for sports also. My opinion is that unless your husband is heavily into sports photography, to the near pro photographer level, then the 70D should do a fine job. The 6D is not designed for sports. Getting good action shots with it takes a good deal more effort and, quite often, a good bit of luck.

I'd say 6D, image quality is superior and a full frame pentaprism viewfinder is vastly superior to a crop format squinty window.

The 70D has a pentaprism viewfinder, same as the 6D. The viewfinder on my 70D did just as good of a job as the viewfinder on my 6D. As far as image quality, I never noticed much difference under typical daylight conditions. Both cameras are good at what they do. They just aren't designed to do all of the same things.

i own a 7d and a 6d the currant 7d is not an easy camera to master in low light the 6d on the other hand will just about focus in the dark is very easy to use and dont let people tell you its no good for sports as i take birds in flight photos with it, with some very good results as an all round camera for family type shots cant go wrong with a 6d great camera . the new 7d mark 2 is as yet untested by any of us , but the specs say a good camera it should be but i would think more so for birders -wildlife or sport
the full frame of the 6d means if you have a large family you can get them all in the frame lol

Didn't know that about the 70D. Looked through an older DX Canon and it was a squinty little window to the world.

Here's a comparison of specs from snapsort.

And the 7d vs the new 7D III.

Regardless which camera you give your husband, he is lucky to have you as his wife.

I have a 7D for about 8 months. I have used it for all kinds of sports and action shots. Some of the low light volleyball have not been up to my expectations (could be just be and wanting every shot to be perfect). I have used it for war re-enactments, wildlife, portraits. I have been pleased overall with the way it works.

If the preponderance of his shots are movement-oriented, then pretty much any of the 7x- series cameras would be a fine choice. For landscapes, low-light, portraits and such, the 6D would produce a higher-quality image. It sounds to me like the 7x series would be a better choice, at the moment.
