Canon 6D vs 70D

I am going to buy a new camera. I had just about settled on the Canon 70D when a friend suggested that instead, I consider the 6D. He knows that I like to shoot landscapes and portraits. He said that since the EOS 6D uses full frame, that should be the camera of choice. There is a price upgrade to the 6D so I am trying to decide if it is worth the investment. I have to have a reasonable explanation for my wife. What do you think?

The 6D would indeed be a better choice for landscapes and portraits.

Do you already have a lot of Canon gear?

What, in particular, drew you to the Canon 70D in the first place? Does it do what you want? Does the 6D?

To be honest I was drawn to the 70D because I wanted an upgrade from my Canon T3i. I also liked the 70D because it was less money. But if it will make a real difference, I would not be
adverse to spending more.

Do you currently have any Canon lenses that you will want to use on the new camera? If they are EF they will work on either the 70D or the 6D. If they are EF-S they will only work on the 70D.
I had a 70D that I sold when I bought my 6D. The 70D is better for shooting anything that moves. How much better depends a lot on how fast the subject is moving. It also takes better video, with the right lens. Both focus very well but the 70D's system handles movement better. The 6D was designed for landscapes, portraits, typical tourist shots, etc. It is excellent for that. It is also much better in low light/high ISO situations. Both have wi-fi and GPS. In fact, they have more similarities then differences. The 2 major points are how they handle motion and low light. The 70D, because of it's APS-C sensor also has a much smaller field of view then the full frame 6D.

That's a very good and concise comparison. But one small correction: the 70D does not have GPS, at least not built-in. That woud require the accessory GP-E2 GPS receiver, which is overpriced IMO.

The Live View and video focusing system on the 70D is the same Dual Pixel CMOS AF as in the Canon 1Dx. This is big if Live View and video figure into your plans.

The simplest answer is better overall image quality and better low-light/high ISO performance by about 1-2 stops.

You're right! No GPS on the 70D. I guess I carried that over from my 6D. I certainly never tried to use it, obviously! In fact, today was the 1st time I used the GPS feature on my 6D.

I think your wife is over-bearing and demanding. And you definitely need a full framed camera to combat that kind of tyranny.

I have the 70D and it is a great camera, but for what you are going to do, the 6D is far superior. The low light capability is unmatched at that price in a FF camera.

Keep us informed as to the successful rationale used in justifying the 6d to the wife. I like to keep a list of what has worked for others. ;)
