I'm looking to purchase a mid-level SLR and have kind of gotten stuck at Canon 70d and Nikon d7100 which would you guys/gals suggest?

D7100 would be my first choice. It is a great camera. Of course Canon shooters will voice their opinion too. I would suggest going to a camera store to pick each one of them up and see if one feels better to you.

You can probably expect suggestions from users of Sony, Pentax and Panasonic as well.

The loyal opposition speaks up. As a Sony user, I don't think there's an easier handling body than my Alpha 850. B&H has a couple in their used department for reasonable prices.

The best advice I can give you, handle all the bodies you're considering. Whether you decide on Nikon, Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc. doesn't matter. What matters is that the body you choose feels natural in your hands. If it doesn't, you'll regret the purchase and you'll not be happy shooting with it.

If you expect to shoot video a lot, then the 70D. Otherwise, the D7100 is better for still images.

I wouldn't worry as much about how the camera feels, our hands and brains are very adaptable.

Why am I looked upon as opposition. The OP asked a question about Nikon compared with Canon. I don't recall he mentioning anything at all about any other brand of cameras. I simply suggested that others would suggest their brands. Was I not entirely correct?

I should have written that as the loyal minority. I have in the past carried Nikon, Canon, & Minolta for several years each. My point being that there aren't many of us who don't carry Nikon or Canon. :D :D :D

Welcome to the Hog, Crest. Both would be very good choices and are very similiar but the D7100 wins on image quality according to Snapsort.

As has been mentioned, it would probably be best if you could check out your choices first but very few of us actually get that luxury due to our shopping habits.

It would also behoove you to look at the images produced by your choices. Not to compare yourself to others but rather to see what the cameras are capable of, as the first kind of comparison will only set you up for disappointment.

Happy shopping and check out any and all reviews you can find and (of course) as all the questions you want.

Buy both (just kidding) It is well to remember that the glass is more important than the body.

Hi Crest. I am fairly new to the forum too. I was deciding on those two cameras as well. I wanted a new camera for my birthday so, I went to my local camera shop along with my neice and sister. I did my research just like you before I went. I asked questions about the Canon D70, the Nikon D7100 and the Sony A77. I asked how each one performed on still shots, action shots and videos. I ended up getting the Nikon D7100 because I will be shooting more shots than videos. But, you're at the right place when you came here for information! These guys are great! Welcome to the forum Crest!

Hi! As Dennis suggested go to a camera store and check out all of the brands that interest you. In general, all of the cameras available today are high quality and it simply becomes a matter of preference

I had the same quandary about 6 months ago stepping up from a FZ200 (I got a bad case of sensor envy after my panny was stolen). For my purposes I decided that the minor difference in IQ was not significant. My final decision was based on the articulating touch-screen LCD, builtin wifi and the split-photocell focusing system - it really is quick. No matter which one you buy, its only natural that you will wonder if you made the right decision.
Don't worry, they are both quality merchandise and you will be happy with either.

My preference ( money no object) Sony a77, Nikon 7100, and Canon in that order - mostly for sensor qualities. If money/lenses ( used) are an issue, then it changes to Canon first ....

I'm a Nikon guy and have the d7000 wish I had a 7100. Canon just came out with the 70dii. Check the specs. it'll make any apsc guy jealous except the sensor. But that's getting a little bit picky. It's a pro apsc .
