An interview with fyrlife,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
30+ years on and off. More serious the last year.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No training and Wildlife is what I do most.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Capturing something most don't see-the rare moment.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Can you walk us through it? Nikon P600 for ease of portability due to how I shoot (question 13) No special setup

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I use as little PP as possible Auto fix on most-brightness/contrast, light/dark/sharpening. Pretty new to PP.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Ron Garrison-long time San Diego Zoo photographer. Ken the Lion cub was especially expressive the day I was there and I took several different facial expressions-all cute!

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Wish I did not have to shoot through the crummy glass they have at that exhibit. Wish he had not been in the "prop" car they have in the exhibit.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Cropping!

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My Horse (see #13)! Tripod 2nd.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
A long lens. The further away you are from truly wild things, the best chance you will have to catch them acting naturally.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
None

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Draw/sketch

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
The majority of my Wildlife shots are taken from the back of my horse. My Photography is a byproduct of my endurance riding. My horse allows me to get closer without spooking wildlife, allows me to cover more territory resulting in more things to shoot, and sitting up high allows me to see more. And they both have learned to stand rock still when I say Whoa!

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Not really other than Facebook.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Keep your eyes open and camera handy at all times and most of all have fun!

An interview with BruinsFan,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I've been in awe of photography my whole life. I bought a Nikon D60 about 6 years ago, and upgraded to a D7000 when it came out. The thing that really got me committed to photography was when I stopped coaching my son in hockey. He's been playing for teams that are established with good coaches. He now plays in college and I can be found in a corner of the rink taking pictures. It's a very challenging subject, with the different lighting in each rink.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I don't have any formal training, I've honestly learned what I have from reading the posts on the Ugly Hedgehog web site. People there are so helpful. The photography I do most is landscape and wildlife, and sports photography during hockey season.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Definitely a picture that is tack sharp with good lighting and you just say, WOW!

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Ironically I used my iPhone. I take my camera everywhere I go, my wife and I were out and we stopped by my daughter and her husbands house and it was bath time for the baby and I sat in the bathroom while he was having a ball in the tub and I just got lucky.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I don't post process my pictures, I try to get it right in the camera at the time I'm shooting. Although I recently asked for help with a picture I took this summer in Alaska and as usual the people on the ugly hedgehog site helped me out, and the picture looks great. It's something I'm looking into now.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I grew watching wildlife shows and I always said while watching, "that's great, but there's a guy hanging from a rope or outside that cage that took that picture of those people climbing or swimming" and I wanted to be that person. The inspiration for the picture is my grandson, I think he thinks my face is the camera, because that's all he sees of me. Love him!

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
No, only I wish you could hear him laughing, but I think I may have got that too.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Oh easy, how important lighting (the sun) is to making a great picture.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
It's got to be my Nikon 18-300 lens. It does everything I need, that and my tripod.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
Again, my Nikon 18-300 lens. I take it everywhere I go, and it does just about everything I need. From yearbook photos in the White Mountain in NH for my niece, to vacations photos in Alaska.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?I don't have any equipment like that, I have to trust the sun.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I would probably spend more time working on a 1969 Mustang I've have.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Well I'd have to say that my wife thinks I'm nuts when I get up on a Saturday at 3am and drive to the Conowingo Dam in Maryland to shoot pictures of eagles, or drive to the Portland Head Light house in Maine before the sun comes up just for a day trip.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I take pictures at my sons college hockey games and they have a team site and they're posted on Facebook, WSU men's hockey. Most of the boys on the team are from Canada and their parents can't come to the games and it's a way that I can bring the game to them. When they are able to make a game they are so appreciative of the pictures I take of their sons.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Give yourself a challenge, go out and do it and be your own toughest critic. Go back out and make it better. Have fun, life is to short.

An interview with alissaspieces,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
2 years and I started on a trip to Italy.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training. I do take classes, do a lot of reading, watch videos and study.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Something that makes you stop and look.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I used my macro lens, off camera flash and nikon d7100.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I do post process. This did not have a lot of pp. It was shot in raw so it needed a little to get the sharpness, contrast, etc correct.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
There are many photographers here on UHH that influence me and mentor me. This shot was inspired by another water drop shoot that I did previously.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I would not change anything but I will most likely do it again to try and capture other refraction shots.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
About the elements of composition.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My reflector.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
My 50mm 1.8 because it is a fantastic and versatile lens.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
My speedlight, umbrella and reflector.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Not sure. I just found this amazing hobby, so hopefully I won't really have to find out anytime soon.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
