Well, his name is really Toby, but somehow he got the name Boo.

I think you have captured a wonderful moment with your dog. It has strong emotional impact for me because of his expression. I think that is 90% of a successful dog or human portrait. I love the lighting. You've got the catchlight in his eye, and your DOF choice isolates your subject and gives him a nice background at the same time. Nicely done.

When you next contrive the opportunity for a similar close-up of Boo I suggest that you use a somewhat smaller aperture to deepen the DOF. The one used certainly isolated your dod from the BG, but I'm sure it was less than an inch in depth which resulted in the nearest hairs, as well as those just bryond the head's midline being OOF.

A lovely, appealing portraite...would just like a little more near and far detail of the face in focus.

Thanks Nightski and Linda for your kind words. And, thank you Dave, I wish I had gotten a little better DOF.

I do like lighting in this but think that it needs just a little more detail in the shadows. I don't mind the shallow depth of field as you have his eye in sharp focus. I do feel that your crop is a little tight on the left. He, in my opinion needs some room in front of his nose and to not have his little whiskers cropped off.
