Does anyone know what this was used for? I recently had the siding on my house replaced and removed this from a wall. This is all that remained of whatever system it belonged to in the past. It went through the siding and first floor joist and entered into the basement. The pipe is 1/2" galvanized pipe. The end piece was all that was exposed to the outdoors and seems to be made of some sort of composite material. Many years ago, the house had a fuel oil heating system. Is this something that was a part of that system? Or something else entirely? It's puzzling to me. The house was built in 1950. I have yet to see any posting such as this go unanswered on this forum. I'm leaning on you members for an answer. Thanks. Mike
I suspect that you originally had an oil tank located in your basement or under the house and this was the vent pipe for fume eviction. It's not large enough to be the breather for the burner so a tank vent would be the logical conclusion. JMHO.
If it was on the wall where the oil tank was located it may be part of the vent alarm. The vent alarm was to let the oil delivery guy know when the tank was full. That's my guess.

I thank you two for your replies. Your suggestions gave me direction for further investigation. This was part of a double probe type alarm which was used by the fuel oil delivery man to prevent overfilling the tank. Apparently this was an improvement over the whistle type of overfill alarm. Mystery solved. Thanks again for your help. Mike
very cool,
glad you found the answer.

Now I know too :-)

It's a weather head used to protect electrical wires when they exited a building.

Thanks again to all who replied. Special thanks to wireman8 for putting a name on this piece. Mike

No post & ball wiring system would use this as a "weatherhead" since it's conductive. I still think this is a vent for filling basement oil tanks and the double hole design will possibly cause a whistling sound when air rushes through it as the tank fills. The resonant frequency will change (go higher) as the tank fills.
