Now I'm in trouble

Now I know quite a few of you out there are going to tell me I'm an idiot but here goes.
This is a nice forum with many gentle people who do not like offending others and are tolerant but are they doing anyone any favours when they view a picture which is obviously not all that good and praise it? I see it time and time again. I'm not saying they should be rude but to tell people it is fantastic when it isn't does not help the aspiring photographer.

Are you talking about Photo Gallery or Photo Analysis? There's a big difference. People post in the Gallery just to post, to show us shots they like. There's no sense tearing apart a post in the Gallery and making people afraid to post their shots.

Analysis is where people want serious comments. Constructive criticism is good. Rude comments are not.

OK. Here goes: That B-17 photo in your avatar sucks! You obviously photo shopped it and turned it into, well, something! Shame on you! :-D :-D
Moving right along, I agree with your statement. Most people would, it seems offer praise, even when it's not due. If I see what I think is a lousy photo I generally don't comment unless it is about something specific in the photo. Besides, I don't always consider myself qualified to critique someone else's work. Just human nature, I guess.

I agree. For the most part, I make no comment when these photos are posted in Photo Gallery. I'm sure I have some myself there. Now, just because I don't make a comment on your photo doesn't mean I think it's no good. I don't necessarily view each and every post because some subjects don't interest me, or are getting old. In a lot of cases it boils down to time, and I can't devote that amount of time, even if I'd like to.
I may be old and retired, but I do have another life. Will be off line a few days because of one of those other things I enjoy....travel. Interested to hear other folk's inputs. djt

Good answer. But the OP has a point about undue praise for a so-so photograph. In addition, some others who take pictures do not want any criticism or praise, only wish to show their picture of this-or-that subject, as kind of conversation piece.

The viewer has to exercise some sensitive judgment in these matters, as to how the picture-taker presents his image, and what response he wants from the viewer. If in doubt, I ask, or I just give a vanilla comment that varies with the moment.

My photo might suck but it's not as bad as your aircraft recognition since my avatar is an Avro Lancaster.

I'm talking photo gallery. I know why people show their photos in this section but it doesn't stop others saying great photo when it isn't.

It must be a model held by a string. The props aren't rotating. :D

An Avro Lancaster? I thought Avro made crop dusters? Never saw a duster with 4 engines!

(I better stop this before you fire that thing up and come looking for my house!)

You are dammed if you do and dammed if you don't. There have been complaints from time to time about lack of comments in the Gallery; there is no way I am ever going to the Gallery and posting "This is rubbish, even I can do better", nor am I going to join in with the "Nice Shot" brigade.

I would really like to see the Gallery format changed to viewing only - no comments allowed - in a similar way to the weekly competitions. I did suggest this many months ago but was ignored, obviously no one else agrees.

I look, but make no comments either way unless the image is too spectacular to ignore.

I happen to agree with you. If it's a really crap photo best to say nothing but to see a lousy shot and then to see comments like, "great photo, nice capture" does nothing to help the aspiring photographer. JMHO

I have posted a coupla photos in Analysis because I wanted honest evaluation of a shot so as to learn how I might have made the shot better of weather or not a photo was better in B&W or color and or if I made any mistakes in PP. However Admin always moved the shot to Gallery. Therefore I don't even bother to use Analysis at all. Alsosome comments are not really rude but attempts at sacasm or a joke. Some just don't get it or are too sensitive.

The rules for posting in Analysis are quite specific:

i agree with these comments in general.
The truth is most of us come o the gallery to share with and amuse our friends and yes an occasional pat on the back.
Its a low key gallery and i like it that way.
People wanting to learn and advance would be better off submitting to the critique section and taking the beating.
