Looking for a 1.4 TC for my Canon 70-300 L zoom I recently bought. Superb Lens. Besides the Canon 1.4 TC, I've been reading posts on other TC brands, some good, that work with EF lenses. Can't recall exactly....,maybe tamron. Would like at least one (or two) other (good quality) options to consider besides Canon's TC. Ideally, equal or very very close quality, but lower cost, than Canon. But I am not ruling out Canon either. Comparison and value searching. What advice do some of you have based on your experiences? Goal is birding and surfer shots. Shooting on the t4i APS-C, so my 70-300 becomes 1.6 X more, before any TC.

I believe the 1.4 TC will not work with the 70-300L. I don't have the specs handy, but the only zoom I remember is the 100-400L. Also, only the 1D series and only the 5DIII will even auto focus the 1.4TC w/ 100-400 zoom combo. Do some more detailed research before purchasing looking at the lenses supported as well as the cameras. You'll see in the gripes (reviews) section on Amazon for the 1.4 TC the comments from people who found only after purchasing the product that it didn't work with their equipment ...

I've used the Kenko 1.4 TC with my Canon 70-300mm, but upon careful observation of the results, the images go soft really fast.

Thanks for input. Yes, I saw alot of those yesterday where people found out the 1.4 was not compatable. I'll keep researching.

You can scratch the Canon off you list as well because the construction would cause a collision of the rear element resulting in a premature death of the lens and the teleconverter.

OK. I remember reading that might be the case, but wasn't sure if it applied to the 70-300L. Now I know. Another one off the list. Maybe I'll just add the CAnon version of the Tamron 150-600, and forget the TC route. A bit of gear to haul, but that doesn't bother me. Iam used to lugging hassabladas, nikon film cameras, and tripods down steep cliffs in Hawaii just to get superb water fall shots A few mere lenses and a DSLR + tripond - no so bad. Captureing great art makes carrying stuff worth it for me. Thanks.

I did plan on checking Canon's site and see it is NOT supported (per your link). Other responses were filtering in to that effect too. I was curious for feedback on non-canon experiences that might have yielded sharp, compatible, and well priced 1.4 TC options. So far, none. (Kenko seems to have one that works, but not sharp according to user).

Lens type WAS specified in heading: 70-300 L. (variable apture)
Canon only makes one of these in L series to my knowledge.

Sorry If I was ambiguous, I was commenting on Bob Yankle's reply about his experience using a TC on his 70 -300. Canon has made at least three 70 -300s. Your 70 - 300L is a very fine lens, some of the others are not. Bob did not specify which lens he had. TC generally do not work well on less than high quality lenses.
