I just discovered that I cannot import raw files into LR4 from my 70D. You need LR5, but I have windows Vista so I got LR4 as LR5 is not compatible. So Adobe replied saying I could download the DNG converter if my camera was compatible. Well guess what! Every camera on earth is compatible for the download for LR4 and under, except the 70D! I love my camera, but if you have windows Vista you are stuck! So any hoggers have this problem and is there a solution, apart from getting a new computor?!
You don't need a new computer but Vista needs to go. I would check into the possibility of upgrading to Win 7.
Like Adobe says, download and use their DNG converter. Or, since I dont know what your computer specs are, maybe its possible for you to upgrade your operating system to Windows 7 and then upgrade to LR5.
Wow, Mike just beat me by a hair.
Just a fluke. I never had a computer that ran Vista but I've heard stories, it was one of Microsoft's biggest fisacos next to ME.

Vista works AWESOME for me!! Never had a problem!! Don't look forward to upgrading based on what I have seen of the newer OS's.

Use the Canon program on the disk that came with your computer to make a tiff file and import the tiff file into lightroom.
I just purchased that camera had to upgrade, update everything. Ugh! My husband did it for me so I can not tell you how to do it, but we had to purchase Lightroom 5, upgrade to Mavericks, upgrade Photoshop and I think upgrade Camera raw, as well as update many more files. The good news is it is a great Camera.
I also have the 70D and love it.
I run Windows 7 but I use to run Vista. Vista and 7 are not much different in how they work so you would not see much difference if you were to switch. I run photoshop CC for my PP but I know many people like Lightroom as well.
I hate to change when nothing is broken but in this case Vista is a version of Windows that no one wants to support, so you are probably going to have to bite the bullet on this one... sorry.
Good luck.

The problem is not your operating system. When Canon developed the Digic 5+ processor for the 70D they changed the format of the RAW files. Earlier Adobe programs no longer recognized them. I had the same problem with my 70D and 6D using Elements 12. An update of the ACR Plugin was required and then everything was fine. Elements 12 came with ACR 8.0 but the 70D's RAW files required ACR 8.2 or higher. The problem was, I had to do it manually because the program's update feature wouldn't do it. You probably have the same issue.
LFinger can you please tell how to update. What is ACR? Please be specific as I am new to all this, still learning and not very computor savvy! Just finding things out as I learn LR!

Adobe Camera RAW 8.2 requires Lightroom 5.2 or higher. It will not work in LR 4. Download and use the DNG converter for now. As far as upgrading your system I would wait until next year (Aprox April) when Windows 9 comes out. Mainline support for Windows 7 is ending in January 2015. Windows 8.1 has been mainly unpopular. So it would be probably be worth the wait if the DNG converter works for you.

LFinger was referring to updates for PSE12. You already stated that you have LR4. LR4 simply isn't compatible with your camera and there are not updates for LR4 to make it compatible. You need LR5 with the latest update. ACR stands for "Adobe Camera Raw". ACR is what comes with Photoshop and PSE. PSE stands for Photoshop Elements. The latest version of PSE is 12. ACR is a plugin for those Adobe products I mentioned, but it's also the "engine" that drives Lightroom.
You should be able to find a cheap (inexpensive) version of Windows 7 that will work on your computer. It's best to reformat your hard drive and then install Windows 7. You can use the upgrade feature to upgrade to Windows 7, but it's not very reliable doing it this way. Then you'd have to purchase LR5 which will set you back about $100 or a little more.
One more option is to upgrade your computers operating system to Windows 7 and then lease Photoshop CC. It comes with LR5 for $9.99/month
