I took a few pix w/o a memory card inserted....& at first the just taken images was available on camera for playback, enlarging, etc. Can't find them (5-8 appx. ) now. Are they accessabile?

The camera will hold the images in the buffer, but once you turn it off, you lose them.

You can set a Custom Setting, I believe it is "f12: Slot Empty Release Lock", so the shutter will not fire if there is no card in the camera, to have this not happen again.

Hmmmmm, Mr Bill...

Did you read your manual? I must admit, your question is the 1st I have ever noted on this subject. How long have you been shooting Nikon Digital Pro line cameras? Many low end cameras & P&S cameras do have built in memory but DSLR's store with memory cards only. I have never done this and maybe someone else might chime in with a correct answer to my next comment. Maybe tethering to a laptop or other mobile device could be a source for storage or down loading to another device via WiFi?? Worth a try if you don't like or use memory cards :)

My 5D III came out of the box allowing shots w/o a card in the slot. Seems silly to me, but its an easy menu fix.

It's the "in-store demo" feature.

Kent....Yes.....I looked everywhere w/o luck....the above answer "buffered until camera is turned off" is THE answer IMO

Kent...have used D700 & D4 for ober 5 years...have loved photography for over 50 years.....brainless error....had camera in car at church & was asked to take photos of newly joined family (hopefully can redo some day)...(card was left in card reader overnight after shooting soccer match day before) #%@!
