At present I am using a Canon Powershot SD 1000, just a little camera. I have been wanting to get a new camera, but haven't had the funds.

I find out today, that my phone company has a special offer of a Canon Rebel Camera w/USB interface (10 megapixel), a memeory Card ( it doesn't say what size.) a Camera Case, and a gift certificate to an online photo procesing company. All for $28 a month for the next 2 years. My question is, is this a good deal? would you pay that for this particular camera? And is this camera a good camera?

I know that I have enjoyed small Canon that I have, and have gotten some great pictures with it, but it doesn't have the capability of the shots that I really would like to get. (like the moon, wildlife at a distance, etc,)

Thanks in advance for your input and advise.

Taffie

Taffie, you may want to give us the camera model instead of the one you are using?

Hi Taffie,

It all depends on your budget and which Rebel it is.
By my calculations your total payoff over 2 years is just under $700. To me it sounds like an XS which is going for around $450 and I expect it will be discontinued soon if not already which to me is not a big deal as my 50D has been discontinued for a while now and the quality is still there. I only mention it to give you some thought as to what you really want. Along with the body you choose, there are all of those lenses to choose from as well.

The questions you should ask yourself is: What would you be shooting mostly? What are you expecting from your camera? And what are you able to spend on it?

Thanks, All!! I gave you all of the information that was given me. I don't know the model number, lens, etc. But I will be getting ahold of someone who might know the answers to these questions. Thank you. I feel so stupid at times. I am new at all of this, and know virtually nothing! That is why I was asking all of you. I trust you, and consider your advise to be the best I can get. Thank you again, I will get back to you once I have more information. (I won't be able to find out more until tomorrow.)

If the 10MP is right it is likely an XS, XTi or a 40D. Just recently on CraigsList, I picked up a used T1i (15MP, about a year or two old) for $400. with the Kit lens and a case. According to the Canon Museum Site the XTi was released in 2006.

I think your money could be better spent. If you are used to your existing Canon P&S, the Canon DSLR menus will be mostly familiar to you.

One thing you must be aware of... While the deal appears to be good, how long does it keep you locked under contract and how much will it cost to get out of the contract if the deal is s****.

Sometime it is best to save before buying and avoid monthly obligations for a long period of time.

I use a Canon Rebel and like it very much. It was my first DSLR
and I'm trying to move from AP into manual. I've purchased some good lenses along the way as that seems to be the way to go I stead of necessarily upgrading the camera. I'll probably be ready for a different camera one of these years, but my Canon Rebel has been a great camera so far. I like Canon and plan to stay with this brand. Hope this has been helpful. Linda

I agree this may not be the best deal depending on which Rebel model involved. Since you have been shooting a Canon SD1000 and have not yet gone DSLR, which is quite a step up in terms of size, lens cost, learning curve etc, you may want to migrate to a "Bridge" camera for the immediate future. I shoot five different cameras including a Canon SXi DSLR, but I recently also got a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ47 which has a f2.8-5.2 24X zoom leica lens. It is very much like a DSLR but smaller and lighter and does a great job. Got it new for $189 because it has been replaced by the newest model DMC-FZ150. Look at it and other camera reviews here:

http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Panasonic_Lumix_DMC_FZ47_FZ48/index.shtml

A bridge camera works really well to allow the user to step-up towards DSLR photography without the steep investment and allows one to decide if they like working with the larger style camera. It would be shame to have $700 invested in a camera you won't use due to size.

Without all of the facts, research further then decide.

Need more info to be able to help you. Members have given you good advice. Maybe you should look for good used equipment from a reliable source?

I have a similar Canon - the SD800 - really nice.

As for the Rebel offer, I've found that deals like that are usually very good - for the company offering them. It's like getting an extended warranty - good for the company, not (usually) for the customer.

If I were you, I'd buy the camera I wanted with the equipment I wanted, rather than accepting what a phone company is offering (for some reason).

If I was you I would just take the $28 a month and save it up to buy the camera outright and buy the lens you would want, you would be buying a much better camera than what these type of offers get you for your money. Also the only new canon rebel that has about 10 MP you can buy on amazon for only around $400 on amazon so it would be wasting around $200 accepting the offer.
