On this cool gray afternoon, despite the gray skies, I was able to capture this beautiful hawk in a Cottonwood tree about 250 feet from my deck.

Canon 5D Mk III, Canon 300 f4, IS, USM.......f/4....1/1000....ISO 100

Great shots. I especially like the second one with the raised up wings and stretched out legs - perfect timing.

Good attempt, but all three suffer from too little focal length, and too much unnecessary background that adds nothing to the images.
In all three, 75% of the background could be cropped out so the viewer can concentrate on the subject, which of course is the bird.
I'm not a bird photographer, but have a number of photobuds who do it very seriously, and in all cases they are shooting with 500 or 600 mm primes. Not everyone can afford gear of that calibre or cost, but to overcome your distance from your subject problem, you might consider teleconverters to get you closer.

Thank you for your critique RBSinTo. I agree with your comment about focal length, the 300 was what I had on at the time. This bird did not hang around long enough for me to get my 1.4 or2.0 extender and had I done so, I am not sure I would have had enough light for them. As you probably saw, I cropped these quite a bit and I am not sure whether I would have retained enough sharpness for decent photos had I cropped them more. Again, thank you for your comments.
