Took a few shots this morning at Thunder Cross with my newest lens, Nikon 300 f2.8. These were all shot in manual mode, spot focus, 1600 SS, AF-C and ISO at 125. Still getting use to this lens. Not sure if I should have used spot focus. Your opinions are welcomed!

Nice stop action shots Juicesqueezer. You might also want to try slowing your shutter speed to around 125 and pan on the subject to give your shots a sense of motion.

Hi Joe,
Well from looking at these and talking with you, I think it was you F2.8 you are seeing making them a little soft. But these are good shots! I don't think by looking at these it is do to the focus setting. I remember now what my problem was. As I panning and Bill watched me, as soon as I saw the viewfinder go dark, I had a little hesitation in my panning. He watched me for a lot of shots and we both came to the same fact that I was not panning after the shutter was tripped. But just enough to make the picture a little soft. And was that hard to get fixed. If my eye didn't see the plane I was shooting I had a hesitation every time.:)
And my fix was putting a tennis ball on an 6-8 foot string. Get it swinging and try to pan and shoot. After a few hours I finally programed my brain and mussels to work right.:):)

Hi Joe, br Well from looking at these and talking ... (show quote)

Thanks for the tip Erv. Yes, that is what I could be doing, however, they were coming straight at me. I was on a monopod as well. Practice, practice!
