I just picked up a Nikon D70 with 2 lens at an estate sale. The lens are
AF-S Nikkor VR 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G ED
AF Nikkor ED 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 D
I already have the 2 kit lens
Nikon VR DX AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm 1:4.5-5.6G ED
Nikon VR DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G

I don't need duplicates, but what lens are the best to keep?
Your help is appreciated

My first instinct is to suggest keeping the two "ED" lenses. Let's see what others say, also!

They are variable aperture zooms - I would sell them all.

I agree with you, RWR. If budget is not a consideration, I would do the same.

Keep the 18-70 and the 55-300. Best quality pair of the lenses listed and you get a little focal length overlap, which never hurts.

 When I had my Nikon D7000, I bought a mint 18-70 and was very happy with the IQ it produced.

the 18-70 is a good lens, I used one for several years but it does have a fair amount of distortion. The 70-300 is actually a really good lens, it is an FX capable lens and since you are only using the center of the glass on a DX camera it looks even better. the major downside to this lens is that it is a D lens and will only autofocus on bodies that have internal focus motors. Comparing the 18-70 to your current kit lens, if your kit lens is not a VR model, then I would probably get rid of that one in favor of the 18-70. the 55-300 is ok, it is a really complex lens the 70-300 is probably a little sharper at the long end, but again, no VR and no AFS focus, so if you see an FX camera in your future or have a digital body with an internal focus motor, keep the 70-300 and have fun, if not, then try to trade it and only keep the 55-300.

I agree with you on the AF Nikkor ED 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 D. I actually have one, hardly used. Probably should sell it, as I don't like the fact that focus changes with the zoom. That's really my only complaint. I cannot comment on the other lenses mentioned.

Another way to look at it is decide which lenses to sell. Look on ebay and see what those lenses have sold for recently. That will give you an idea what to expect if you sell them.

As a big plus, its a weather sealed lens.

I'll probably keep the 18-70 and sell the 70-300 with the D70 body, both look hardly used at all, I have to check the clicks on the camera

I would keep the 18-70 and the 55-300 VR. I would not keep the 70-300 D because it is not a VR lens and a lens that long, IMO, benefits from VR.

Neither? The AF 70-300mm will not focus with either the D3100 or D5100 because it is not an "AF-S" lens. The 18-70mm is basically an older version of the 18-55mm. While we're at it, the D5100 has much better image quality than the D70, a 10 year old camera.

If you are interested in infrared photography convert the D70 to infrared. That's what I did with mine.
