will work on a Nikon DX format camera? There must be some all-inclusive list somewhere right? Or is there a specific "product type"?

Please help, thanks!

Tamron and Sigma lenses have Nikon mounts for all the lenses I have seen advertised. If you check their web sites or one of the large retailers the description will tell you if it is for digital cameras only with the smaller sensor size and a 1.5 factor.

B&H catalog for example lists DC and DG for Sigma lenses. DC lenses are used on Nikon digital cameras up to the D300s. The full frame cameras must use Sigma lenses listed as a DG model.

A DG lens may be used on a digital camera but they effectively "enlarge" the object you are photographing. A 105 mm DG lens is effectively like a 157.5 (105 x1.5) lens when used with a D300 or a D90 or similar camera.

Which camera do you have. Some of the lenses will not work if your camera doesn't have a focus motor in it.

The D3100 is compatible with lenses that have a focus motor in the lens(AF-S) and lenses that don't have the focus motor (AF-I). So you are good to go as long as it is for the Nikon f mount.

Just look at their ads in the magazines - they tell you what lenses are for crop sensor only. Remember, there are no FX lenses - the ones that are made for the full frame will always work on the crop sensor cameras. I think Sigma uses "DC" in the lens description to identify crop sensor-only lenses.

Fot Tamron Di Lenses are for Full Frame and APS-C Camera Formats; Di II Lenses for APS-C Camera Formats. I don;t know if Sigma makes lenses specifically for full frame sensors (I shoot canon and I don't see that they have any models that work with full frame sensors.)

here's a link for Sigma DC lens compatability

Here's a link for the full Tamron Product catalog the index page breaks them down into APS-C and all DSLR Lenses
