I am taking a downtown tour that will allow me to go to the rooftops. Should I bring a long lens or a wide lens or both? I am going in the evening and next day.

If you only get a choice of one lens then I would take the wide, since I would guess that you will spend most of your time on the street. What lenses are you trying to choose between? What type of city streets? Narrow and winding or wide boulevards? What can be seen from the rooftops? Just more streets or distant scenes?

The challenge is shooting from the rooftops.

If you only take one, the wide would be the easy choice for me.

If it's evening, whatever lens you take, make sure you have a tripod!! ;-)

You are going up to a high location to obtain a wide view so wide or ultra-wide would be a good choice of lenses. A steady tripod for night shooting would be another good selection. Have fun.

Thanks all. The winner was the wide angle lens because we were so close to so many interesting scenes. Will post a few soon.

Always better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it,

Another good Yogi quote:
"If you come to a fork in the road, take it."

From my experience, money and camera gear are very closely connected!
