I'm going to Boston in a couple of weeks and intend to either go to Cape Cod or to the Vermont/New Hampshire area followed by a couple of days in Boston. Any suggestions on sites, events. (I might be there too early for the peak leaf season, I am not sure when that will be.)

In Boston, walk the Freedom Trail that will take you past many historical sites. In Vermont see if you'll be anywhere near a covered wooden bridge.

Freedom trail (red line on sidewalk).

Boston common: swan boats plus lots of other stuff and gobs of people.

Charles street: old (and real gas lamps).

Boston is surrounded on 3 sides by water.

Lexington.

MIT: old and new architecture. Lots of young people.

Harvard.

Plus more. Take lots of film.

Hi Frosty ... wonderful places for photography. I live on Cape Cod. Where on the Cape would you visit? From Boston, you can ferry over to Provincetown. Martha's Vineyard was a favorite of mine this past summer. To really see the Island and photograph ... I recommend at least 3 days. If you should decide on Cape Cod, you can always write me at PepperMillPatty@gmail.com and I can list some stuff for the area you are staying. Vermont is awesome too! Also, feel free to check out some pics at PepperMillPatty.com. They will show you some beaches, lighthouses and all with towns listed. Please note, I am an Amateur Photographer. Learning my new camera and lenses.

In Boston, take one of the daily tours to the top of the Custom House. There are spectacular views of the city from the top. And of course the Freedom trail offers a lot of opportunities.

In Vermont you will find a lot of small villages and country scenes to photograph but New Hampshire is pretty built-up and congested until you get pretty far away from Boston. Portsmouth harbor is pretty but small but just a bridge away from Maine. You might consider a trip up along the coast of Maine. There's a lot of photo opportunities within a couple hours of the New Hampshire border and it keeps getting better as you go further up along the coast.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think we will be going to Cape Cod and Boston. I like the historical sites part.

I looks like Boston will keep us busy being tourists. Thanks for the suggestions. I like the idea of taking lots of film but I suppose it will have the digital these days.

Thanks for the reply. When I made the post we had not decided whether to go north or south to Cape Cod. We decided to go to Cape Cod. People tell me to see Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island. If I went to just one, which would you suggest? We will be staying in Hyannis. Thanks again.

Thanks for the advice. The tour to the top of the Customs House sounds interesting.

We have decided to go to Cape Cod instead of Vermont and New Hampshire. Maybe next time we will go there and I'm sure we will need to include the coast of Maine. Thanks for the pictures.

If you have a car...go to Acadia National Park...especially if you don't make it out here that often..

Oh wow ... Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket ... I would probably select Martha's Vineyard. But if it is only for 1 day, you would have to plan carefully. You can visit Nantucket for a day easily. Hyannis has easy access to ferry service for both Islands. Martha's Vineyard I feel has much more to see and shoot. However, I could not visit all towns in one day. If you are staying in Hyannis for a few days, you could do Martha's Vineyard twice. For example, the main towns to visit are Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, Edgartown, Chilmark and Aquinnah. Aquinnah has the cliffs. Gorgeous at sunset around 4:30ish. Chilmark has the famous General Store and Menemsha. Menemsha is a small fishing village. These areas can be seen in a long day planned. Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown can also be done in a long day. Vineyard Haven is my favorite. They are noted for the boats, I have been watching a sailboat for 2 years now being built. Oak Bluffs has the Gingerbread Houses. They are fun to photograph. And Edgartown has a classic, preppy character. All of these towns have lighthouses. All are unique. I found that there is always something to photograph. I take the ship out of Woods Hole and pass right by the Nobska Lighthouse in Falmouth on the ship. There are wonderful places to eat and shop as well. Not sure what kind of camera you are bringing. I have taken my wide angle one trip and now I always take my telephoto lens. Depending on when you go to Hyannis, a whale watch is amazing and you should still be able to do that in the beginning of October. Please ask questions. I will try to help. Public transportation is easily done on Martha's Vineyard. And it is very organized too. If you buy a day pass, you can travel between the towns. The buses run frequently.
