Went out today and got one of those.....ahh man....moments when i got home. I went to set the pic quality to RAW and some how set it to Medium. Im glad I didn't get any of those once in a life time pics. At least I had the card in the camera lol.
To my understanding, you cannot alter Raw capture quality of your camera, but you can select quality of JPG. Check to see if you selected JPG medium quality, instead of high.

I set it to med jpeg NOT RAW. That was my problem, first time i have ever did that. I thought it was kinda funny
I am sure all of us at some time or another have been taking photos in one situation and then gone to another a few days later and find out 1 or more settings were completely wrong for the new setting. After doing this several times I typed up a list and carried it with me to look at each time I went to shoot and finally it becomes habit. This is for my D 300 and may not work exactly for everyone but it is easy to customize it.
Focus Mode, release Mode, Metering preference, autofocus area mode, exposure mode, flash comentsation, white balance, raw/jpeg choices, and iso setting.
The first day I shot with my new camera, it was set to 12,800 ISO and I couldn't figure out how to change it. The manual looked straightforward but wasn't . The pictures actually came out with a bearable amount of noise. But yeah, it makes you glad you didn't get that once-in-a-lifetime shot that day. Maybe someday...
