Manual focus issues ?

Sometimes while shooting with long lens +1.4x I find that I am too close for auto focus to work but If I reach out and turn manual focus I can see the image in clear view. I am far sighted and wear glasses to read or view photos on the LCD viewer. When I am taking photos I am not wearing my glasses and it seems that I am in focus. Once I get home I find I am out of focus on many if not all of the pictures. So the question is does me not wearing my glasses effect the outcome or if the auto focus doesn't pick up the subject , does that mean I just can't nail it. ?? thank you in advance.

You mention you wear glasses to view the LCD screen. Do you take pictures using the LCD or the view finder. Many cameras have a focus control for the view finder itself and that could solve your problem.

If your autofocus is not working properly I can't see where that would have anything to do with wearing glasses, or not, except you can see right away something is wrong. Instead of being too close, you may not have enough light to autofocus with the +1.4x added to your lens, robbing you of more than one f/stop of light.

Have you adjusted your cameras diopter correction to match your eyesight? If not, then you will never be able to properly focus the lens manually.

MT shooter, while looking through the viewfinder all looks good, but if I have bad eyes ......... I believe I have it adjusted. Do you know of a template or system that works well for getting best focus. ??

Use a lens that you KNOW is giving you sharp images. Set it up on a tripod and AF on a contrasty subject. Then turn the Diopter correction control until you find the sharpest rendition of the subject in your viewfinder. That is the proper setting for YOUR eye. Leave it there and then try manually focusing. Compare your manually focused shot with the same shot using autofocus, you should see no difference in the final images.

It would seem your AF is not getting enough light to focus properly - or - is defective in some way with the TC or lens. Manual focus may be your quickest/cheapest solution - if you can successfully accomplish it.

The other thing I would say is - Are you sure it is focus and not motion blur ??

So one is saying that if I take my camera put it on a tripod and point it toward a tree trunk and have my focus point on center focus and only center it on the trunk. I have the camera set for auto and never look into the viewfinder or on the screen. I then use auto focus and take a pic. However, the photo will be out of focus because I have not adjusted my diopter.

In other words, is focus dependent on the diopter being correctly set to my eyes?

The diopter has NOTHING to do with the AF system of the camera. It DOES change how your eye sees the image focus in the viewfinder. That's why its imperative you adjust the diopter to YOUR eyesight if you plan on manually focusing the camera.

A coupla things which may have already been mentioned. Tripod or hand held? IS on or off. (should be off if using tripod) what shutter speed are you using. Cable release or not. Out of focus could be any of those things.
