The moon is a daylight object, so with short lenses 300mm or less, handheld should do. That said, I am shooting a series of moon shots for a TV series I am planning... all with the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera and a big old manual 300mm f/2.8 with matched tele-extender, which on the Pocket Cinema Camera, gives something like 34x magnification.
Moon, 7 days before full...

New to the site and would like to share this moon image.
Taken Sep 10, 2014 with my Canon SX50, using tripod, and adjusted with Picasa.

I've never been able to get good definition with a full moon, but since my tripod broke a long time ago, everything has been handheld. For that you need a faster shutter speed. I shot this one at f5.6 @ 1/1000 I took another @ 1/640 that's a little brighter.
I find the moon easy to shoot. I use a 70-200 f/2.8 : SS 1/250, Aperture F11, ISO 100, AF-S and hand held. Works well and my Facebook friends seem to love moon shots over everything else. Good luck.

Excellent shot. Why not post the original so we can see the detail.
The moon image is at 100%, pixel for pixel, cropped from a 1080p frame. There is no further resolution, as the Pocket Cinema Camera, current version, is only 1080p.
