I have read many opinions about the pros and cons of adding a UV filter to a lens for protection. I have seen them priced from $10.00 to almost $300.00. I just purchased a Sigma 150-500mm lens and am unsure if I need to buy one (86mm) and how much to spend if I do. All opinions welcome. Thank you.

Not again.

Most all here are genuinely helpful, sincere and caring while "others" just believe they have ALL the answers. Luckily it's just a short list of "others", so it's easy to keep track of the names... :-)

FAQ: Which Photographic Filters for Digital Photography?
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-26502-1.html

"A UV Filter is used to reduce haziness created by ultraviolet light, to which photographic film and sensors are sensitive, but not the human eye. A UV filter passes all or most of the visual spectrum, and blocks ultraviolet radiation. UV filter quality is important."

b FAQ: Which Photographic Filters for Digital Pho... (show quote)

Looks like it is time for me to through out most of my UV filters. The main reason I use them on all my lenses is lens protection. But I'm taking quite a hit in image quality.

I was disappointed with the Tiffen results. Tiffen was a high quality filter in the old days. Now, competing against the $5 knockoffs they aren't doing so well. Hoya is an old standby so that didn't surprise me as much.

I have Hoya clear filters on my lenses, just for protection. I also use the Xume magnetic adapters, so I can have them on and off in less than a second. I use 77mm CPLs with those adapters.

Jerry, any downsides to the Xume? Can you use lens caps and hoods with these?

Yes, I do have high quality, multi-coated UV filters to fit most of my lenses. Mostly B+W MRC and Hoya HMC or HD/HD2. Those filters are stored separately in my camera bag... I install and use them occasionally... Such as when shooting at the beach where there is blowing sand and/or salt air. The latter is particularly hard to clean off lenses. So it just seems practical to be a little cautious. I also might use if I were shooting photos at a paintball contest... I do use them at times when I'm right next to a dirt race track or similar.

I did not consider air borne particulate. It would be prudent for me to purchase the filter for those occasional situations and then leave the filter off under good conditions. Even though this subject has been hashed over on the hog before and I have researched the subject it is discussions like this that help people see details they have missed. Thank you to all who have helped me with this.

I too, use Xume products and the only draw back I've encountered is they don't have the size my Sigma 18-250mm takes which would be a 62mm adapter. Other than that I'm completely satisfied and I think they're worth the investment.

We all haven't been on here since day one (UHPF) let's all play nice now. I learn something new each time a subject is bantered about as new people add their 2 cents worth, only my wife claims that I know everything at least that is what she keeps telling me.

My lens protection are a lens shade and the front cap. I do not use filters for "protection."
If you decide to spend what for me is unnecessary money on the filter do not use it to shoot. It is totally useless.

You know what bothers me most when I visit my local camera store is every time I purchase a new lens is that the sales staff always ask me if I want to buy a filter, my answer to them is why do I need a filter and most can't give me a decisive answer, so I put forth the question to them are you just trying run the purchase up for commission, guess what the answer is. Yes for more commission and answer is no thank you!

My wife says the same about me but I can tell it is not sincere, but just sarcasm and there is usually other words said as she walks away.

How can your wife be mad at you: your Avatar shows you like CATS?
