I have a Canon 60d camera and I have a tripod I'm going off to shoot night shots using the bulb mode. Now I need a wireless remote or cable release. Which one is more versatile? On ebay the Canon one sells for $24.99 and the brand Hoot sells for $3.50. Any advice you can give me on which type of cable or remote to get will be appreciated.
Thanks

I shoot Nikon so I am not sure about Canon. But I would get the one for your camera. I went cheap on mine and it didn't work. ended up with the one for my camera.

Stick with the Canon brand when possible.
I got the Vivitar RC-200 when I couldn't get the Canon and it works great.

The wireless remotes can be found cheap that work pretty good I actually use my TV remote for my Pentax K-5 and it works great.

I too have a Cannon 60D and when I purchased mine I buy an off brand infrared RC-6 with the only brand on it saying Shoot and it works really well I would recommend though for night shots getting a cable release that has a time on it such as Satechi TR-C Timer Remote Control they are a bit more expensive but have features such as taking a picture every so often and automatically ending a sot after a certain amount of time

Why do you want a remote release? If you are afraid of camera movement when pressing the shutter button, here are two little tricks.

1.) Set the mirror to the up position.

2.) Use the self-timer. This model has a two second setting in addition to the usual ten second one.

As a practical matter, the camera and mirror movement will be insignificant compared with the total exposure time.

The TV remote idea is mystifying to me. What thought process made you try your TV remote, with your camera? My next question is how many of you folks are now going to try your TV remotes on your camera? I know I am just to see if it will work and I already have a remote for my camera.

Saw on the Pentax forum where someone had tried it a couple of years ago and decided to try it with my K-x and it worked so now I use it with the K-5

Mystifying to me too. I am just going to stick with the Canon remote. I can't afford to blow up my new camera.

If you want to keep it simple, just get a wired remote. They come with various lendths of lead wires, and anything over three feet will dampen out any possible camera movement resulting from your holding the controller at the other end. Most of these remotes have a button lock-down feature, designed specifically for shooting in "B" bulb. Press and lock the button down to trip the shutter, and walk away if you like. Upon returning, release the lock-down and the shutter closes. Couldn't be simpler.

I'm just a beginner, so how do I set the mirror to the up position? I do know how to set the self-timer.

Most cameras require that you be in front of the camera to work with an infrared remote. Stick with a wired one.
