I've had this camera for two years and it has been great. Lately the auto focus does not want to work properly, it tries to focus but cannot lock in. Any ideas what could causse this?

Do you have just one lens? Or does it happen with more than one lens? Which one/s do you have the problem with?

Also, does it happen in all conditions - bright sun, darker, close objects, far?

I just read on UHH where someone had an auto-focus issue that they fixed by physically pulling the lens manually, the part that extends out. But I'm thinking I'd call Canon before actually doing that :)

Do you have the manual that came with the camera? Read pages 83 - 87 regarding auto-focus points. Try some changes there. Or you might want to just re-set camera to factory defaults (page 176) and start over.

I've only had this problem on my t3i, or any other Canon dslr that I've owned, if there isn't enough light available for the camera to grab focus.

Could be a problem with the lens you're using. As asked before, do you have more than one lens? Have you tried different lenses at the same shooting site? When on site have you tried to find something bright in the shot to focus on?

Are you using full manual with all the focus points? That could be a problem. Your owner's manual (you can download from Canon) will tell you how to switch to single point focus if you're not already using it.

In my experience this is an excellent camera so I'd have to believe an solution is something really simple.

Good luck

There isn't enough information as to what causes this.
