This yellow jacket ...and several of his friends, have decided not to pass up the free feed at the hummingbird feeder. The yellow jackets are more protective of the feeder than the hummingbirds chasing the birds away when they get near.

Thanks Bruce. Grizzly Burger closed in the early 90's. Tony Knowles who was both Mayor of Anchorage and later Governor of Alaska was a partner in Grizzly Burger and a couple of similar restaurants. The original Grizzly Burger on C and Northern Lights opened shortly before the first McDonald's did ...right across the street from Grizzly. While I know Tony casually, his wife Susan and I have worked together for a number of years in a breast cancer fundraising organization, Breast Cancer Focus, Inc. Nice people.

Neat shots! Yellow jackets get downright cranky this time of year.

These seem to have a little more attitude than most. Thanks for the kind comment Linda.

I would like to do something about them, but as my wife warns, whatever I do other than physically whacking them is likely to harm the hummers ( http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-242256-1.html ) as well.

Thank you Sylvia, I try! Even with the cable release or the remote release there is still vibration from the shutter that makes the long lens and small subject combination challenging.

Great photos. I hate spiders and roaches. I try never to get close enough to a spider to shoot it.

terrific shots erbiv! i read once that if you put a little teeny bit of vaseline around the opening of the feeder it will keep the yellow jackets and bees away but won't bother the hummies . might be worth a try:) :-D

Have you ever been in a soccer complex or a busy park this time of year? The jackets swarm the outdoor trash containers getting their fill of sugar and woe be the little kid that gets to close because they are just steps away from a loud piercing cry of pain. Oh what memories.
