Hi! I'm going to be marching in a Mardi Gras parade and my DSLR is too big and heavy to take with. I'm looking for a good quality pocket size camera that won't make me wish I'd brought my D80. also not too expensive. recommendations?

If you are looking for a wide view p&s, consider the Sony Cyber-shot. On the front of the camera it says "26mm Wide-angle lens". This camera shots wider than the 17-55 on my D30 (1.6 factor = 27mm). The number don't make sense, the comparison images do!!! The flash is weak... Maybe 10'.
Check with Walmart for price. Small in size.

My granddaughter has a Nikon CoolPix S9100 and it takes amazing shots. A friend I work with has a Canon PowerShot S95 and he loves it. I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 that I really enjoy (actually my daughter-in-law is enjoying it right now). Do a google search for P & S reviews and see what you think.

Sony or Nikon make nice pocket cameras. Panasonic has one in a local add this week at Best Buy that is considered a pocket camera with a rather large zoom lens. Hope this helps.

Canon A560 IS is such a good PS. Almost as good as my DSLR with the same shooting options.

Nikon S-8100 & S-9100 are both on sale due to model changes. S-9100 has excellent optical zoom but only 12.1 megapixels while the S-8100 has less optical zoom but 16.1 Megapixels. These camera are now reduced to less than $250 from their original $400 price tag. S-9100 is being replaced with a new S-9300 model soon to be release.

My favorite of all the point n shoots are Canons. I've tried 'em all over the years. It's hard to go wrong with the SD series, and my real favorites are the S90, S95, S100. Image quality is so good that they can almost replace my SLRs. The SD and S series are metal cameras with great lenses, just not really long zoom ranges. I've never found a Nikon P&S that I really liked, and I'm a Nikon guy. The G series Canons are great if you want to add a shoe mount flash on a little bigger camera. The Panasonic DMC-LX5 is also an awesome little machine. I love to put a quality P&S in a belt case and ride around Dallas on my scooter or m/cycle taking pics. I have a body of work I call "A Gig and a Gallon," from the images collected on the excursions. Just always remember to use the hand strap, the little guys are really easy to drop.

Ditto for my S95. I keep it with me at all times fits nicely in any pocket.

It's hard to make a recommendation without knowing how much you intend to spend on a small camera or what other purposes it might serve. Got some bucks? Need some flexibility? Go for a Canon G-Series camera. I've had a G-9 for years and I use it extensively when I go hiking and when I go on extended bicycle rides like on the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Towpath Trails. It's rugged and it produces incredible pics. Or go with something cheaper and smaller; there are lots of them out there and Canon and Nikon make some great ones. Read reviews on DP Review or Steve's Digicams.

But here's one problem with those cameras that most folks never think about until it bites them: they are small, thin, and usually have rounded corners, making them very slippery... they can squirt amazingly easily out of your fingers and crash to the ground. I would never walk in the MG parade with one of those things! You MUST use a wrist strap at all times!

I had the same dilemma for travel last year. Just needed something for snapshots. Had to have a smaller pocket model. Picked up a refurbished Panasonic FH80 for half the price of new. Still using it without any problems since I bought it. I would guess newer models are available for similar savings. This is third refurbed camera purchased without any issues whatsoever. I use them for a couple of years and give to kids or grand kids. That way I can buy a newer model.lol
