It has finally rained in South Texas and since I cannot get out to shoot today (well I guess I could if I were brave) I thought I would start something in UHH forum. Question is-- What and where is your favorite photo contest and did you win anything? Mine is "The Valley Land Fund contest in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas." I came in 6th out of about 72 entries. My next favorite contest was the Coastal Bend Contest out of Corpus Christi Texas and I came in first in the digital division. You could shoot film and digital at that time. Now it is only digital. I had done landscape before I got into the contest which was mostly wildlife, and I became a better shooter because of the competition. Your thoughts.

I haven't entered any contests, but it's good to hear that you are finally getting some rain.
Mac-- The drought here in South Texas has been very severe and critters have suffered greatly. It's been a light rain. Hope for more thru the week.
I live in the hill country, by San Antonio, Tex, in a little town, Boerne. I took some nice fall shots of our river the Guaedalupe and was happy with the beauty I captured. I just missed a local contest but was a finalist in a national contest called photography vibes for a girl I photographed. I entered give us your best shot with best buy and haven't heard anything. It's an experience letting well known photographers look at our work.
I thought that rain had become and endangered condition, but that is Texas Rain Drought Flood we get it all in different degrees each year. Entered 2 Contests got 2nd in both. Would like to find Texas contests to enter (List)
Photo man-- I would recommend the Coastal Bend contest out of Corpus Christi. Held every two years. Pairs ranchers with photographers who share the money won. In most cases you stay on the ranch. The contest, like the Valley land Fund contest, exits to show folks what we need to conserve and protect and is an educational endevor as well. First prize is several thousand bucks and competition is tough. It gets hot, it gets tiring and it gets too you if you let it but it is a great experience and you will have a chance to view a wealth of birds and mammals and landscape. The Valley Land Fund Contest is in "limbo" for now because of the economy. We hope that it will return soon.
Visual-- yes it is a great experience for others to view your shots and a great reward when you find out you have succeeded in winning.
I've won a few contests, have been in the top 10 several times on others, but I stopped submitting to those that take money to enter. Here's even one from this forum:
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/photo_contest_entry_details.jsp?pcenum=834Winning a contest is flattering and serves my ego well, but I think I've moved passed them as I haven't been submitting any of my new stuff lately. Not surprisingly, contests seem to be pretty subjective. If you think you have a winner, think again. The competition is steep! When I look at the entries, every one of them look like winners to me! The talent out there is phenomenal.
Im not a professional, but if I were, I think Id hesitate to enter any of my work. You really need to read the legal terms of submitting carefully.

I entered a photo in a contest in the photography school in the pensocola navy base. I won first place. Then was disqualfied because I was'nt a student there. I was on a tin can plane guarding carriers at the time only in port a short time. So mush for that. It was during the Koran war.
