tripod with camera just dropped on cement floor and landed on side of camera and dinged the base(casing) of the lens.Lens will no longer retract and get lens error and says to restart. Optics don:t seem to be damaged, but retraction mechanism is.Possibly the lens is rubbing against the casing on trying to get out) Is this something that i can take care of or do i have to send it out for repair. Who would you recommend i send it out too(BH,adorama, etc) whose fees are reasonable. Thanks !! It just ruined a nice Superbowl sunday for me!!

I would start here.

Good luck, I hope it's not terribly expensive. :(

Its new enough that parts should be available, but keep in mind you want an estimate first. The repairs might easily excees the $380 replacement cost That is very common with P&S cameras.

Maybe you can find a broken one on eBay with a different problem and combine the 2 to get 1 working. People often sell them with a busted lcd, easy swap if you aren't afraid of a screwdriver.

Here is a search I save in eBay. The camera is new enough that there aren't any sx40 in it yet.

It may be hard too find one on E-bay, because they just came out 5 months ago.

I'd try contacting Rick Riggins who is one of us here, give him the chance to quote for the work.

Sadly, I would bet repair costs would be almost as much as buying new. I worked at a camera store and folks could no believe the repair costs on P&S cameras. The stuff is very labor intensive. But good luck.

That's how I lost my first good camera many years ago. One Halloween, I had my Miranda Sensorex on a tripod to take pics of our jack-o-lantern. Kids came to the door, l left the camera, crash.

A poster wrote on this forum that a photo director for a newspaper told his photographers that they should never leave a camera unattended on a tripod. That's my rule now, too.
