Greetings hoggers! I am gearing up for a trip to Brevard, North Carolina in October where I hope to visit places like Great Smokey Mountains NP, Nantahala NF, the Mountain Bridge Wilderness and the like. I am listening to a local friend and reading up on foliage forecasts for the Ashville area, and there is divergence of opinion. As I am travelling from Alaska and have to make reservations somewhat significantly in advance, I would like to make an educated decision. I am planning on spending a week. Anyone that has any first hand knowledge of the area and recommendations as to timing for foliage and/or must see sites would have my sincere appreciation for sharing their insights. Thanks!

This is perhaps the most busy time of the year for visiting these areas so it will be crowded. It's hard to predict foliage color timing for it varies from year to year. But I found this website (link below) where they at least try to keep everyone updated. Enjoy your trip. We don't have mountains as big as those in Alaska, but the Smokies certainly put on a show of color like no other you will see.

I visit this area every fall and the last week in October is usually a good time to go. This can vary but it will give you something to shoot for.

TGanner,
I live in NC and I usually go to the Smokies during one of the last two weeks in October. It varies with temps and rainfall.

Try this site.

My brother lives there. I got good fall colors in early November near Charlotte last year. You'll like it.

I live in Raleigh and last year my photography club went out to Brevard to shoot some of the North Carolina waterfalls. The waterfalls and the surrounding mountain vistas were spectacular. If you're interested in including waterfall captures Google NC waterfalls for links to free maps and guides. I think you'll really like the Brevard / Asheville area. It's beautiful! Have a great trip.

Thank you PVR8. A friend lives in Bevard, and her recommendations about the trails and waterfalls there are one of the things drawing me. I appreciate your feedback. I will have to post some photos in November.

Here's 2 hand-held HDR shots from November 6 last year in my brother's neighborhood in Weddington, just south of Charlotte, at the tail end of the colors.

Charlotte is actually at a lower elevation than the Smokies and will be later for fall color (October Wk 4 or Nov wk 1). If you are planning on spending your time in the Greater Smokey Mountain park at the higher elevations, then mid October vs late October would be better. Cades Cove is a great place to visit in the Park, as is Mt Mitchell State Park, on the Blue Ridge Parkway, north of Asheville near Burnsville. I would plan on visiting the Great Smokey Mountain National Park, and then take the Blue Ridge Parkway from Ashville, to Mt Mitchell, then on to Grandfather Mountain and Blowing Rock NC. Enjoy your trip

I vacationed last Oct. in the Roan Mt. area. The fall foliage in the Roan Valley was absolutely spectacular! A trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway is a must. Plenty of scenic pullovers. Chimney Rock is positively awesome. The movie Last of the Mohicans was filmed in this area, which features mountainous backdrops, shear cliffs and beautiful Lake Lure resting far below Chimney Rock's aerial perch. Linville Falls is also worthy of a day trip. And don't forget the elk roaming about. By the way, Judges Riverside Restaurant in Morganton, is just a bit east of Asheville, boasting the best ribs I ever tasted! Enjoy!

Let me know answers you may need. I live close by and visit the Brevard area often. Don't forget to visit DuPont State Recreational Forest for the waterfalls and mtn biking, Shining Rock Wilderness area of the US Forest Service, The Blue Ridge Parkway is the gem of the Park Service with Devils Courthouse and Graveyard Fields to hike and take photos. You don't have to travel to the Great Smokies to see visitas and water features.
The peak leaf is always around the middle of October. For me, the love the end of the month or the first of November. The leaves are fresh on the ground and in the streams....looks like a painting when hiking and you can see great distances through the trees.

Just my 2 cents, but you may hit it right this year with timing.A lot of the "locals" and "old timers" are saying it will be an early fall this year, but who really knows! Some folks are always saying that it won't be pretty this or that year because of the rainfall or lack thereof, but it's always beautiful!! All I know is that the trees are lush and full this year, and barring any Atlantic or Gulf storm coming thru here to de-nude them, should put on a great show. The trees are already putting on their "tired green" coat, which signals the end of summer. Have a great time.....spend lot's of money!!!

You may also Google some of the local photography clubs and get some location tips from them. They will know more of the secluded areas off the beaten path that the hourds of tourist can't find.
