A well defined subject captures the viewers eye/attention. The object in front of your lens may not be your real subject. Your subject may not even be an object; it may be a mood, light, unusual Point Of View or visual comment.
Throughout the challenge some subjects might be in the form of a question: Guess the Subject. Some will be obvious and some I discovered by accident on download - I didnt get the subject I thought I saw. Since September is Back to School month - there will be suggested reading. Today's:
http://www.lightstalking.com/3-tips-for-creating-strong-images-with-a-clearly-defined-subject Starting tips: 1) Make the subject a stand out (think of the many ways you can do this)
2) Compose carefully and choose what youll show 3) Take advantage of Aperture and focal length.
Read this somewhere: If you want better photographs, put your lens in front of better subjects.

Make the subject stand out and capture the eye. Use aperture and focal length
Choose what you'll show
What was my intended subject?
Sort of - I was thinking of all the converging lines and repetition of the patterns in the seats, sides, ceiling - but they do all add up to depth of field. Touche, Msr. RoadRunner!
This was not the intended subject

Getting late...Will be back tomorrow . Thanks Pat for the interesting start!
While fishing, real early in the morning
The sun reflecting off of the early morning mist and trhe capture of my son's cast made this photo for me
I could have done better with the sky but I was too strung out over the rodd and the reflections and changing the sky was sort of forgotten
What now? The size of the trout? The smallness of mywife? ,
Using my wife for bait? Bragging on a 22lb brook trout? Bokeh?

Here you go.
#s1-3 my eyes travel to the light, the lighter detail in 2 and 3 keep me doing retakes. #4 nice and simple sets off the boat, but could it be the water is the subject?

I see the golf course as prominent, but the dramatic sky is what holds my eye - is it the intended subject of #1? #2 my eye keeps looking at the details in the barn. #3 - the stamens?

#1 belongs in a fishing magazine - fishing line leads me right to the ripples it makes and it stands out because of the colors and mist. Right? Trout is huge. DOF w Huguette and bad boy with the camera using her for bait!
