I have been asked to take indoor track pictures, sprints, and I need some help. Know very little about track, besides starts and finishes, what would make great pictures?

Well if it's a close finish then a finish picture would be good. If there are relay's going on try to get some pics of the handoff of the baton. Maybe get a lineup shot as all the racers are getting set in their blocks or something like that. I don't know much about track either.

A few shots head on from the finish line as the runners are starting and then approaching but then get quickly off the track. Indoor sprints happen very fast. Alternatively, some angled from the sideline "head on" type shots so you're showing all the runners coming toward your position. Not as good but less risky. Some "starting" shots from behind the starting blocks as they're getting started and moving away. You'll get some in-shot zoom practice too but you could probably use a short wide angle zoom like the 10-20 or 17-40 for that type shot.

Biggest problem will probably be getting permission for the head-on and start shots. May just have to settle for sideline shots.

well, I try to talk my way into it. Maybe offer pics to the guy running the meet of his team. That works in other sports.

I've shot indoor track for many seasons and the best way is to get to the finish line head on...now this is not always physically possible because of the track arrangement or the officals will not allow it. It that is the situation then stand just of to the side on the outside of the lanes. If you are not sure then watch a few races first and observe what the other photographers are doing. First and foremost be bold in your approach...act like you belong and typically no one will question why you are there.
Side shots of the hurdles are easier to get but if you do not have a frames FPS then it may be difficult. In the longer indoor events place yourself just outside of the curve where the runners are really leaning into the curve.
Hope this helps some

Not an indoor track we don't have them in Sunny Southern California. But here is an angle you could get to from the stands at an indoor track
