I finally broke down and bought a Barnes & Noble Nook, got the Samsung Tablet. I'm starting some medical treatment that will last 90 days and except for checking blood work will keep me close to home.

If you will, please list books and authors you've found useful, i'm not into learning the math or the highly technical gobbly goop as i likely will not retain it.

I'm figuring 1/2 dozen books to study, not just read, will give me something to do while house bound. Altho the 1/2 dozen can move either direction. I will bookmark this thread and compile a list of the most suggested and go from there.

If you can, please keep opinions about other's suggestions to yourself

Any help with book selections will be much appreciated

I wish you a speedy recovery. Bryan Peterson's, "Understanding Exposure, 3rd. Edition" is a great book. Tony Northrup's, "How to Create Stunning Digital Photographs", is another good book and it is interactive (meaning you can view videos while reading. Something you might consider is to subscribe to Lynda.com for a few months. There are more courses of high quality than you can view in a lifetime. The courses are high quality and I use it almost daily. Again, I wish you a speedy recovery.

I am a total fan of the Kindle, Nook readers and use the Kindle on my iPad, but for photography books think you will be happier to one you can hold and not get a digital version. Those are the only types of books I do not use my Kindle for. They are much easier to reference and thumb through etc.

i too prefer to hold the paper in my hands, but right now that is not an option. i need to study the samsung galaxy manual but seem to remcall you can bookmark and make notes in books and go back to them thru the screen. i imagine one day i'll get the bound versions, but for now digital will have to do

A couple features of the nook you may not be aware of...you can search for the first or all times a word is used in the book you're reading. Helps if you have a "what was that about" moment. It also has an excellent dictionary, adjustable font size... Mine has a cover with a built in reading light...I love it. Luck with your treatments.

CR, this is a great read for you. Also written by B. Peterson is a book titled "Exposure Solutions". In the book Peterson describes certain difficult situations and how to work around them. One of the most difficult shots is a back-lit portrait, he explains the "how" and the "why" of the settings and how he handles the problem. The "device version" of the book includes videos that show his explanations. Not only is Peterson a superb photographer, many feel he is also a great instructor. This book has some very important information presented in easy to understand terms.

Not familiar with David Pine's second recommendation but I am a fan of "Understanding Exposure" and recommend it as one of the all time best. Less talked about but good are Peterson's "Understanding Composition Field Guide" and Ansel Adams "The Negative" and "The Print".
Hope you are up and running and better than ever soon. ;)

Some of my favorites:

David du Chemin's books especially "Within the Frame", "Photographically Speaking" and "Beautiful Anarchy" - as a photographer who has suffered a disabling injury and multiple surgeries/rehabs, his later books (after his injury) may be something that you connect with.

Art Wolfe's " The Art of the Photograph"

William Neill's 4 volume ebook collection (cheap but oh so beautiful)

Guy Tal's "More Than A Rock" ebook. Beautiful and insightful.

Michael Freeman's "The Photographer's Eye" (composition classic)

Moose Peterson's "Captured" - has some tech stuff in it but mostly about his development as a wildlife/bird photographer

I'm a big fan of Tony Northrup's book that David Pine suggested as well as Peterson. Also, Scott Kelby's four part Digital Photography set available for Kindle for about $40 has lots of "how to" instructions, some video links to his tutorials and lots of bad humor. If you like his style, he's good. All of these have helped me to grow.

Most anything by Bryan Peterson or Scott Kelby is a safe bet. Hope you have a good recovery.
