Good question. The books give examples of things to do something. Try them. Experiment. Just start taking pictures. Look at what you have done. What do you like and don't like about them. Take them again. Post some of the pictures, ask for comments. Learn from the comments. Ask questions. Have fun.

Start shooting using one setting at a time, probably in auto, record your settings then move on to tv, av. manual etc., compare, observe, study, read, and repeat, then move on to another. I used my Wife and clock on the wall so I would have the same light and conditions as a reference. Change your wb so you can see the difference.

What type and make of camera are you using? If it can use different lenses and can change settings, it would helps us to help you.
There is nothing wrong with starting in the Auto mod. Get to know your camera first. Then you can start playing with settings.

Shoot what interests you.

Look at your pictures. Think about how they might be improved.

Then look for answers (in books, and elsewhere) to specific questions about how to achieve those improvements.

Cheers,

R.

OK that's a good camera. I take it you got it used? Do you have the manual that goes to it? If it were me I would do a reset on it. Get rid of all the settings someone else has put in it. If you don't have a manual you can go on Nikons site and look at one online. Next I would put in P mode and go shoot a few pictures to see what it does.

you can look in your community and see if they have any adult ed classes or local college to see what they have for non credit courses, also see if theres a local camera club to join.

Learn to ask honestly for criticism and be prepared to accept it. You won't always agree; but at least listen and try to see their POV. If you see a photo that you really like, try to duplicate it: lighting, composition, etc.

Get lots of practice. The beauty of digital is that it's a lot cheaper than film. The other advantage is that the camera records the technical stuff. In the film days, a lot of us would write all of that stuff down.....See what works. Take the same photo changing the exposures and f-stops to see what happens. take the same photo different times of the day (and the year).

Can you post a few pictures? We have a lot of answers. And the plus is, sometimes we know what we are talking about :-D

Welcome to the Hog. I just looked up the specs on your camera, no bad at all, better than mine. Take pictures and keep notes in a little note book that will fit in your pocket and write down the picture number and the settings and post, post, post and ask for critique
