At times like this I am grateful to have access to the wisdom of so many experienced photographers. A friend of mine wants to sell a Canon 17-55mm F2.8 lens he has had for about a year. It sells new for about $850 to $1,000. What should his selling price be?

Ebay has the used IS version starting at about $670. I would say about $700 - $750 because you know it's in great condition. If it has a filter on it, a few more $$.

A great length! I have the Nikon version... W/O IS!
I use mine for about 90% of what I do.
I've heard the Canon is almost as sharp! Just kidding!!!! Just jealous the Canon copy has IS...are you listening Nikon?

I think less, primarily because it is a zoom. I don't trust used zooms. I have given up on zooms. I now only buy and sell prime, much less to go wrong.

When you buy a used lens consider it like a used car. New car has everything new, used car has many parts that are wearing out.

Also, I have bought new and sold many things. If you truly want to sell the price must be right. And by right, I mean it moves now. I sold a Nikkor 70=200mm 2.8 VR I in 5 minutes on Chicago Craigslist to a buyer in Minneapolis. His wife paid cash the next day in Chicago. She works here. There was nothing wrong with the lens. I simply did not want it any longer.

imho
