We did a whistlestop U.S. 3 month 15K mile tour in 2011. Cripple Creek in September was not a highlight of our holiday, but had a few interesting things. The whorehouse museum was worth a peak as were the exhibits up by the NGR. Perhaps we got it on a bad day, but as Syl says the road into it is magic.
Pikes Peak railway is good, I wished I'd hired a bike and rode up it though. Garden of the Gods is spectacular - and you'll get it with most of the crowds having left. I want another buffalo burger from the G.O.T.G. eaterie. Haven't had anything like it since it.
