The last part is not necessarily true. My MacbookPro (I use PC/Windows at work) includes software that allows me to use Mac and PC software. I use files from work all the time on my Mac.
Also Microsoft discontinues their support periodically which forces companies to upgrade with the new versions. Employers like mine spend millions (yes that is correct!) purchasing new licensing, upgrading, testing, etc.[/quote]
It could be that there is improved software out there for common business situations since I last had to concern myself about cross platforms and telecommuting but what about graphic programs? Can you access a Windows based Photoshop, Poser, Bryce or any of the other applications that still issue them in operating system specific versions and that I already own? A business perhaps can afford those upgrades or write them off. It's very few I've run across that make those upgrades until they're forced to.

I'm looking into that issue. The Windows (business applications) work stuff that I do is all "numbers crunching"; my "fun stuff" are graphics programs. Right now, I'm trying to find out if I can move my old (windows) PS stuff over to my Mac-- I cannot afford to buy it again. Right now, I do some PP on my Mac and some on my old PC. I enjoy working on the Mac so much more because, frankly, it's easier. This is from someone who has worked "all my life" on PCs....
I'll let you what I discover....

Great!....Having to replace software has been the biggest reason I've steered clear of changing O/S's. I have a couple of machines but when I upgrade it's usually because of significant technology advances rather than a worn-out system. It wouldn't work for me if I had to replace the expensive software.
Well all I can say is WOW! Y'all are FANTASTIC.
Well all I can say is WOW! Y'all are FANTASTIC. I have only been a member on this forum for a little while, but I have been so impressed with the information and the generosity of the people on this forum. You are so willing to take the time to explain and offer appropriate advise. Now I have to digest all this wonderful information and make a decision.
Thank you, thank you, thank you,

Windows versions of software may be functionally identical to their Mac counterparts, but they won't run on the other platform. You have to get the right version. However, you can often get a cross-platform upgrade, at least from some vendors. Adobe makes you provide the license code for your current version, and requires you to send them a signed copy of an agreement that you have removed it from your system before they send you the software for your new platform.
I just went thru this exercise. I suggest you check in with the Adobe.com website and view their forums. They may have more detail then you want, however their conclusions are easy enough to understand.
