New Tripod Needed

I have two tripods but both are on the light side. I recently got the Sigma 105-500mm which is too heavy for either one. Can someone suggest a tripod and ball head that can handle this weight without being too heavy to lug into the woods???

I use a Bogen 3021 with a Bogen 3055 ball head. Handles my D90 or D7000 with the Sigma 50-500mm F4-6.3 wonderfully, as well as larger lenses and my Pentax 645 medium formats also. Total weight about 4 pounds and it will reach 80" total height. Nice field setup.

I recommended the same setup to UHH user nanc a few days ago and she got the whole setup on Ebay for $155. The Bogen 3221 is the same tripod but its black in color. An Ebay search turned up several active listings. I actually just bought another 3055 head on Ebay last week for $29 to rathole as a backup, that makes a total of 4 for me. (I have trouble passing up a good deal)

Just bought the Slik Pro 700DX off ebay for 139.00 Very impressed with it. It will hold your lens and then some. The only down side is its pretty heavy, about 7or8 pounds.

A good tripod and ball head will be in the $400-600.00 price range. Done get a cheap tripod and head, spend more and get something that will last. You have spent a lot of money on your camera equipment why not spend the same kind of money for a good tripod? Saving on a tripod is looking for trouble. You want a secure head, not spring loaded and a sturdy tripod. Look at used tripods on ebay there are good deals there. You dont have to buy new, I have a 30 year old gitzo 200 series aluminum tripod that looks like it went through a garbage disposal but it works just fine and I paid 200 dollars for it. Dont buy a cheap tripod, spend more and get something solid, your equipment deserves it.
