Sending Large Photo Files by Email

My camera is 21 Megapixels and the photo files are huge. If I want to send a friend a couple of shots what is the best way to do so? I tried to send through gmail and it took 10 minutes to load and then never went through.
In the past I have used Snapfish or Shutterfly but many people do not wish to open photos from these companies because they believe that they have to buy something if they sign up.

Use Picasa to send photos by e-mail unless you have to send full size files. Once the photos you want to send are in the tray click on e-mail and it will ask how big/quality or original and off they go.
Picasa will downsize them to a sensible size for e-mailing with decent quality.

Use tools / folder manager to select a single folder othewise it will search your entire drive and display all the image files it finds.

If you are sending an image just for the friend to see, there is no need to send as 21 megapixel. change the resolution to 72 and the longest side does not have to be longer then 800 pixels. Then any email program will be able to handle your files.

My advice (Per my own email experiences with sending photos) is to resize the photos to a smaller size (rename them as ex. 21 would be 21a) then send them out that way. Some emails max out at 10mp per photo in email so be careful about that.

1. You could reduce the size of the file by converting to JPEG and/or changing the dimensions/resolution of the digital photo.
2. You could send the file full size by using a free FTP site such as: https://www.wetransfer.com/
3. I don't recall what my gmail file attachment restrictions are but generally most emails are restricted to 10 MB. That restriction is usually both outgoing and incoming.
The FTP site above has a restriction of 2 GB. There are others...just Google <free large file transfer service>
I forgot I also use Dropbox which is free and has a drag/drop interface. You do have to sign up for it but they don't hound you and don't nag you.

I have XP and use Outlook Express.
I send image files all the time that are resized automatically for email with just a few clicks.
I don't know any other operating system.
If this is of interest, I can list the steps.

I use dropbox.com. You have as many private folders as you want plus one public one. Very convenient and dependable. Upload the file or files and send the file or folder link to someone. All done.

When emailing images to share with friends and family or for display on the web I ALWAYS resize my images between 850-900 pixels on the longest side. I do this almost as a self imposed rule.
This should be good enough to send 10-15 images thru email with no problem BUT with this said some email programs don't allow the receiver to get more than 5-20 images even when resized. I guess it's something to do with virus protection but this is just a guess.
I have had many issues with AOL and hotmail because of this. If you're sending just one full size 21MP image you're definitely going to have a problem.
If you need to send the full size image try Dropbox. I have only had one client question this in the year I have been using it. It's free and simple to use and has been a simple solution for me to share/send full size images.

Thanks to all of you for your support and great responses.
I am going to try several of these today. I was able to send it using Outlook, I do have Dropbox and was not able to download to Picasa successfully.

Resizing them and changing them to jpg will do the trick. The problem you are having is that the file is too large for any email server to handle - especially email that is not a business account. Follow the advise here and you will have no problems. Some programs like Photoshop Elements has a tab called "share" that will automatically resize your pics for emailing or hosting on Facebook. I just share my photos on Facebook.

Yes, resize. Even the smallest jpg size of my camera is 4 megs so I routinely resize them down.
