Ah, OK. Actually I always merge in Photomatix, because the deghosting options are much better than in PS.

I agree, it is not simple because I cannot open a picture in RAW

Wish it were that simple, both the OP and Wendy2 have tried this method and for them it does not work.

I guess you have jumped a few posts on this thread, one of which is where I posted a link to an Adobe forum in which this problem is prevalent.

I have researched this problem the best I can to no avail, it seems there is a problem which Adobe is ignoring and the community is unable to resolve.

I hesitate to say this, but IF I were in your situation I would look at installing Lightroom which will enable further processing on the files in ACR.

I don't usually advocate throwing money at a problem, but if you are contemplating doing a lot of this work LR will be of substantial use.

Searcher,
What if I just stay with PS and get photomatix? What is your suggestion? I need all the help I can get.

That should do it as well. One of the above posters suggested this as a better solution than using the PS HDR, and I think he is right. The only thing that bothers me is that if you have the need for further processing in ACR on the Photomatix tiff file, will you be able to do it?

I do use Photomatix and usually find no further processing is required or desirable.

With the new "Contrast Optimizer' in Photomatix most of the haloing and tonal unevenness problems with the original Details Enhancer are gone. Still, creating a 32 bit floating point TIFF in Photomatix and tonemapping in ACR or LR is sometimes nice. Even if you solve the problem I suggest Photomatix if you are serious about HDR, but it would be nice to have the ACR option as well, though these days I only use it perhaps 5% of the time. Contrast Optimizer is definitely my strong preference. I never tonemap with the PS tonemapper--I don't like it at all, though I know some people do. It is better for less extreme HDR, although Photomatix can easily do that as well.

Guess what! Remember when I said tiffs, even flattened, could not be opened in Camera Raw.....well I was wrong.

I just opened Bridge, clicked on the the flattened tif and one of the options was open in camera raw. However....since it was flattened, I don't have access to all the editing I did, but can edit it again in Raw.

The Camera Raw option does not appear if the tif is not flattened.

One down, one to go - your post has given me an idea that may help the OP - Thanks

What I would suggest is a test:
If you would create a tiff file in Photoshop - just a background layer, and save it on disc.

Open (or attempt to open) this tiff in Camera Raw by using the Open As procedure - NOT from Bridge.

The Open as procedure is described a few posts back.

There must be no layers except for the single background
The tiff file must be created in Photoshop (not HDR)
