Attempting to shoot birds

Attempted some bird photography at Frank Bonelli park yesterday. Not much flying so no pressure.

But I was way off with my shots. I stayed in aperture priority, mostly at 7.1 with auto ISO. When I reviewed my shots in LR, I had tons of focus issues and motion blur. The motion blur confused me because my shutter speed was pretty high in most shots and I was lying on the ground, using my elbows as my tripod.

If anyone wants to chime in and tell me what I was shooting....I'd appreciate it.

I downloaded all of your photos and I am missing the blur and focusing problems. I looked at the eyes specifically and all seemed to be pretty sharp to me. I don't know how far away the birds were from you but they looked pretty good. Could they have been a bit sharper? Yes probably but depending on the distance and resting on your elbows I think you did well.

Remember that while your elbows seem pretty stable, if you are using them by resting on the bone it gets tired and is not as stable as one might think. The elbow comes to a point down there.

I know others will post with some reasons other than mine.

Good shots of your local birds.

Not sure about the first, but it might be a Muscovy Duck.

The second and third are pics of a Graylag goose, and the one with the hump at the top of the bill is known as a Swan or Chinese Goose.

The last, depending on where you are and the size of the bird is either a Canada or Cackling goose. Canada's are larger.

Thanks guys.

Actually, these were the good ones. I didn't bother exporting the others from Lightroom.

On the first three and the last, I think I cropped out at least 50% of the picture. I was at max zoom:140mm

For the fourth, I was at 66mm. I slowly walked as close as they would allow and sat still for about 20 minutes before I started shooting.

Thank you.

My daughter's kept asking me while I was shooting and the wife asked me later. All I could tell them was that they were birds.

I didn't realize I was 'In Hiding'. I took these at a lake right beside Raging Waters in San Dimas, California.

I'm just sad I couldn't get any action shots.

Many of the birds were quite animated, but when I'd point the camera at them....

It was like that cartoon with the dancing frog.

140mm is not much of a zoom . What exactly were you using? The only thing I can think is a 100mm lens with a 1.4X .....

Yeah....I was using the kit lens that came with my D7100. The 18-140. I was actually very close for most of my shots. The shot in the grass....I could just about reach out and touch them.

Looks pretty good to me! Hope you don't think that all of the shots that we take of birds are perfect.
