Continuing to work on what's possible to enhance photos. Thanks to members for help. One I did make changes to, the other I'm hoping you give me direction before I do. Thanks out there.

The first one I'd like to have seen what is in his hand, rather than having it obscured by her head. It's tricky but perhaps a very slight change in viewpoint could have revealed that. It also seems just a slight bit over exposed.

The second one is nicely exposed, but the subject is too centered within the photo. I'd have placed her a bit to the right, almost to where the shovel was touching, but not quite, the right edge of the photo. I'd have also cropped a bit of the image above her head.

Such an infectious smile your granddaughter has!

A highly respected member (photo pro) of UHH recently reminded us of a very important composition point: the background is as important as the subject. The background in #2 is so full of distracting elements.

Is there a place you can set up for her to play that has a shaded, simple background (which isn't too close to her)? Then, if you're able to use a relatively wide aperture, you can throw the background out of focus so not to compete with your sweetie.

#1 is one of those nearly impossible part sun, part shade shots that should be avoided like the plague. Chose one: sun, or shade, as you did in #2. Exposure, color, contrast and focus are very nice in #2 but, as Linda mentioned, the background did you in.

It's frustrating, isn't it? We wait for good weather and bright sunny days to go out shooting, only for the harsh directional light to give us all sorts of problems. Quite a few of the shots that you've posted have this problem, and I think you just have to take the bull by the horns and make allowances when shooting.

If repositioning and recomposing aren't options, try to avoid getting lots of bright sky into the frame. And a camera with a better dynamic range than your Rebel would help also.

The second one looks good. I would havae tried to get more blur in the background. It's a little distracting, but her smile makes up for a lot in this one....

Photo # 1 is what it is . I agree would have been better to see the item they are looking at . #2 is a great photos . little PS work .. Blur the back ground .. remove the rope by the windows so they do not look like coming from the childs head . and a high pass filter to sharpen up the photo just a little . Here is an example of what could be done.. this is a 10 min fix . would be nicer with little more time .

The first one is very good, but the arm adds nothing; in fact, it detract from the composition. I imagine the the arm was pointing its index finger to something, but the girl's face keeps us from knowing what. If you are not adamantly opposed to PP, I would remove the arm from the picture completely; easy to do in this picture.
The second picture is lovely. For composition purposes, I might want to crop it a little on the right to move the girl off center as rmalarz has already suggested.
