Aside from appearing to be a tourist, I had always thought that camera neck straps were a good idea, from a safety standpoint. Some others recently have opined that they are more dangerous, offering a chance to get snagged on something or cause one to be strangled. Some of the people in my camera club use no straps, just hold the camera in their hand (obviously DSLR's). One older and vastly more experienced photographer than me says "in your hand or in the bag". I am curious about others' opinions on this issue. Thanks

I prefer to use a 1" wide narrow strap instead of the fancy wide types that broadcast my camera brand. It's only common sense to have a strap attached it's just handy and provides an additional means to hold on to the camera. if I'm shooting fast and furious I will sometimes take it off my neck or if I'm in a crowded situation where I can't control my distance from other people I'll take it off and either bag it or wrap the strap around my hand for security.

always a strap when i'm just walking around but if taking pics will carry it, easier to use ,but like shaky shutter said will wrap it around my hand for security and if it is around my neck or shoulder will hold on to the camera also depending where i am

always use my strap. A DSLR and lens is a big investment to take a chance on just carrying it around in your hand.

I have a sling type strap. Lets the camera hang at my side. Saves thr neck too. I can keep my hand on it to to stablize it. Also have a hand strap on it too. That gives me more control.

I use the big Nikon strap that came with mine, though I am looking for a good hand strap.

I sometimes wear the strap, but there was one time that it got caught on something and slipped from my hands when I was standing up. It was a short fall and I managed to get my foot under it before it hit.

It was a wake up call, though.

I made a sling strap out of a long, narrow neck strap and a sturdy little snap swivel. I clip it to my tripod insert, which I always leave on the camera. The sling is quick and easy to unsnap when using the tripod.

If it is a short walk about, a neck strap is used, by me. If it is an event where I need to carry more then one camera or a couple of lens, I use a Cotton Carrier system (relieves neck pressure).

The use of a bag, is good, but still have to carry it around and scramble to get the camera / lens / flash out and attached before you miss the shot.

Your choice.

I hate the factory straps, they are too rigid and always too short. I use OpTech straps on all my cameras. The PRO model, they are longer, softer, stretchy for shock absorbtion, super strong, and CHEAP!

I also use their Double Sling to carry two cameras at once.

I use a regular strap.
Never felt threatened about being strangled.
How I "wear" it, depends on what's going on and what I'm doing.

I use an Upstrap. Never slips.
Also, from a security perspective it's better to be attached to anything valuable.

I have non-descript black nylon & neoprene straps for both bodies. Nothing for the Minolta, but I rarely use it.

I use a BlackRapid RS-4 for my extra body. My main camera hangs on my shoulder or in my hand.
