How to rate Canon vs Nikon - very difficult. If you threw Fuji x series into the mix, I'd go for the Fuji.

This has been discussed many times before. Use the search function here to see what has been stated previously. Little changes.

Sorry, it's a fools errand. They each are excellent and have their strengths and weaknesses. I was a Nikon shooter for 40+ years but, I'm sure I could have lived very nicely with Canon. Now, the universe is much broader, and, depending on what and how you shoot, there are mirror less cameras to choose from and at least 3 or 4 other DS LR's that, while not quite Nikon's or Canon's in my humble opinion, are pretty darn close.

Decide what and how you do most of your shooting and then read up on the cameras that are best at that, then go to a large camera store if you can and handle them. Then make your decision.

The OP only asked about Canon Or Nikon. Therefore bringing any other brand to the discussion is not appropriate

There are arguments going both ways, and then there are the proponents for Pentax, Minolta, Olympus, etc. Bottom line: it's not the camera that determines the quality of your photographs, it's your skill set. I've seen spectacular pictures taken with cheap point and shoots, even disposable cameras. I've seen horrible photos taken with the 'best' slr's.

Buy what is comfortable and affordable for you, learn how to use it and push yourself by trying new things.

Remove all the branding, hand them over to someone who has never shot either, then ask them to identify them. I'd love to see the results!

You are getting the answers you are getting because this subject has been beaten to death here. The Nikon people swear by the Nikons and the Canon people swear by the Canons. The best way to figure it out is to go to a camera store and hold them in your hands. Choose the one that feels best to you. Both brands are great so you can't go wrong. Once you choose which one fits your hands and feel best to you come back and ask about specific models in your price range. As Brian suggest, Nikon and Canon are not the only brands out there. Sony, Pentax, and Fuji are right there with Canon and Nikon. They all produce fine photos with the right person looking through the view finder. Find what is right for you.

Kojak, welcome to the Hog!

Unfortunately, you started with a topic that has been discussed many times before, and really does not have an answer.
It's like asking what is the better car, a Chevvy or a Pontiac?

If you asked this question because you are considering buying a new camera, my first suggestion would be to go to a camera shop (NOT a big box store), and ask the staff about different models and brandnames.
If there is no camera store near you, there are a number of websites where you can find out the specs for specific cameras, and also compare several different cameras.
My favourite one is http://www.dpreview.com

BTW, my personal preference would be neither, it is Olympus!
