I met a pro outside the Superbowl in Indianapolis today. He had 2 - 300's set with different lenses. A short distance prime of (what looked to be a)55mm. and a gargantuous Zoom. I have no idea what size it was,.. it was just a long Nikon.
Myself,... acting like a lesser photobug asked him what he thought.... I meekly told him I had a D3100 and I wanted to upgrade to the D7100 when it's released.
He had a "S I" Press Pass hanging from his neck. He pretty much could go "anywhere" he wanted.
After a brief chat we both agreed we were waiting for the new D7100....to come out....and he went on his way.
Once again proving how "Cool" Nikon people are....!
His 300's were kinda beat up(scratched and marred)from lots of use,...but he was sincere about wanting the D7100.
Does this make sense to you pro's?????
He said it'll be a "smokin" DX!

Yes. There is a place for the $6000 D4, but the D7000 and by extension the 7100 are fantastic for sports. For some reason, there is a feeling that the DX cameras are not up to professional work, which is hogwash. Both the full-frame (FX) and DX sensors have their strengths and limitations. It is all about the right tool for the job.
The D7000 is a STEAL at $1200. I have every reason to think that an upgrade will only increase its capabilities.

That zoom might have been the Sigma 300-800mm. A guy at B&H told me they have rented out 8 of them to Pros headed to the Superbowl. Its a monster!

I think you will find that most shooters for SI do not WORK for SI, but are hired on an event-by-event basis. The gear belongs to the photographer. And only a handful of the shooters for any NFL game work for an organization that supplies the equipment, so I would bet there is a LOT of rental business. I know here in Denver is is hard to rent a 400/500/600 on any Bronco home-game weekend.

I subscribe to SI and was under the impression their photogs were on their payroll, which I think some are, but I'm sure they have independents also. I'm sure you're right, i'm just saying they are independent and not exclusively for SI. If SI dosent want their pics, they will sell them to someone else.

I have been in SI and it was all my gear. Stringers rent the big stuff on a use by use basis...can't lug the tanks job to job on an aircraft. Usually buy insurance also.
