Taking my DSLR on my adventure motorcycle

I've been thinking about taking my Minolta DSLR on my trip in Oct.
I will be riding mostly on roads with some dirt roads included. I plan to pack the camera in a padded case and put it in my aluminum panier boxes.
I was worried about the vibration damaging the camera (this camera has the stabilization in the body).

Any thoughts from you hoggers?

Enough foam padding should keep vibrations to a minimum, you should be alright.

Thanks so much. I love the camera (even though it is pretty much out of date now) and don't want to break anything. I'll post some pics from the trip when I get back.

I always had my dslr with me when riding my Harley. After a while a screw came loose inside the camera and fried the circuitry. Thankfully it was an entry level camera because it was not much more to buy a new camera then fix the ruined one. I didn't use foam for vibration but I always wrapped the camera in towels and had cushioning
underneath it when it was in my saddle bags. I may be paranoid but I rarely take my 7d on the bike. In any event you may want to have yours serviced after a time so you don't have the same issue.

You are shooting a Minolta DSLR? May I guess the Maxxum 7D?
Not many of those left out there.

Yup. I dearly LOVE the controls. Flash compensation right on my thumb ... But 6mega pixel and old processor... I'm looking at a D7100 later this year - I'm sad

I was in your shoes a few years ago...I took the plunge..been taking my Olympus E-volt 520 on my hog ever since with no problems. The Evolt has stabilization in the body as well.....Take it along with a small tripod...you'll be glad you did.

Good point. Sony still services these. I'll check into it.

My Nikon D7000 has been on several motorcycle trips. It and my lenses and other gear travel in a padded camera bag and ride in my Goldwing top case. I've never had one minutes problem.

Good luck and have fun on your trip!

Man I would have that sucker strapped around my neck WHILE I was riding! I'd be a-ridin and a-shootin!

But then when I bail - it's around my neck! Or while I'm shooting I'm not looking at the road! HaHa splat

Not a problem. My DSLRs have gone thousands of miles on my motorcycles and ATVs. Washboard roads in a pickup are harder on me but don't hurt the cameras either.

My Cameras have ridden thousands of miles on my Harley ( speaking of vibration) with no effect regardless of roads, weather or temperature changes. I take no special packing steps as I want to be able to stop and use the camera at will.

The little P & S Canon rides in a windshield pouch on the fairing and my Nikon DSLR rides in the tour pack in the normal every day camera case it lives in.

As I said, I have seen no problems with cameras or lenses.

Any photo issues are my skill set or lack there of, not the fault of the cameras. I invite you to take a look at the photos from my last motorcycle trip here if it helps ease your mind. Ride, shoot and enjoy :-D
