I think I know where I'll be this weekend!!
Try for a wide angle of a bunch of the balloons on the ground as they are getting blown up with people in the photo. Makes for a great shot as everyone will be looking up. Also: DO NOT STEP ON THE ENVELOPE!!!!!! Pilots and/or crew will shoot you!! ALSO,, ask to take photos from the basket into the envelope. I've never been turned down, but they do appreciate it if you ask them. Another thing::::: HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[quote=glasskey]Cool. Wish I could make it down for that one. Are you going?
I plan to. I made it to the Page, AZ festival, but I missed the Gallup, NM rally this year. We used to do the Albuquerque rally many years ago. There were about 250 balloons at that time and we could camp right next to the field. Now there are almost a thousand.

The balloons here in Reno are absolutely beautiful.. ther are only 150 balloons but with the mountains behind them, it makes for some great photos. Don't know if it's true, but I hear there is a waiting list for balloons. I have hundreds of photos of the races. enjoy

We have the International Balloon Fiesta here in Albquerque every October. Around 600 hot air balloons do a mass ascension four times during the 9 day event. For a suggesstion, if you can get close to the balloons, take a photo while they are cold inflating. That is when the basket and balloon are laying on the ground and they are using large fans to blow cold air into the balloon to get it inflated. Take the photo from an angle to include the bottom of the basket and looking into the inflated balloon. While the balloon is still in the horizonal position, the pilot will walk inside the balloon envelope to check the velcro fasteners and inspect the fabric. This gives a great reference for the size of the hot air balloon. Check out this link to see photos from the Albq Balloon Fiesta.

I'm going to a winter balloon rally, my first time, and would like any tips regarding shooting hot air balloons. I'm using a Nikon D7000 with the kit lens (18 - 105). Would love to see any picture posts of this kind of event. Thanks.
Try and get up close and shoot into the balloon to get the fire heating up the balloons...then see if they do a balloon glow in the evening...beautiful site...use your tripod.
Have fun!
On the ground...early
thanks for the info, just might go and if i do i will post some pics

By the time I get this in someone will probably have already mentioned it but, they will often do a night burn, firing up the balloons, lighting them from the inside with the burners just at dusk and dark so you may want to be prepared. If your not going to haul a tripod at least get somewhere near a good place to lean to steady your camera.

At night when they lite em up you can get some great shots. Up here in bucks county Pa. when they fly over the lake they dip their gondolas in the water. You can hear a lot of screams.
For all of those waiting to see photos from the winter hot air balloon rally in WI - sad to say it was not to be. I went there early Sat. morning and because of dense fog it was canceled. I went back for the Sat. 3pm launch and it too was canceled because the field were too muddy for safe landing and takeoff. I couldn't go back on Sun. so I'm not sure if there was a launch or not. Oh well, maybe next year - the weather is playing havoc up in these parts - many winter events/activities have been canceled or curtailed this year.
My local ice arena couldn't even get their outdoor rink flooded to use this year since it has been too warm and the outdoor rink is not regriderated.
Sorry to hear the events were cancelled. I wound up in Rochester, MN on Friday for work and then went to Winona afterwards on Friday until yesterday afternoon to visit relatives so I didn't get to Hudson.
Yeah, Saturday morning I got up bright and early, looked out the window and saw lots of fog. My daughters were dancing at the event and when we got there, visibility was about a half mile. It was totally overcast and the frost was frozen all over the trees and bushes, which made for a rather interesting scene. Sunday was the same. And of course on Monday we get clear blue skies.

I don't know if they launched this year. I called on Saturday and they said it was going to be a scrap. I was there about 2 years ago and only 4 balloons were there. It was too cold that day.
