After having shutter button focusing for 16 years I am sometimes forgetting to push the back button and wondering why the lens didn't focus. But I will keep after it until I get it right. It does help, push once focused then wait to push shutter at right moment. Unless of course the subject moves.

I always use BBF since I begun learning to use my DLSR.

There are some really good threads on this very topic here, use the Search at the top of the page and look for back button focus. I'm left-handed and I use my left eye for the viewfinder, so my right cheek gets in the way. Great in concept, not so great in practice for me. It seems a large majority of the pros do use BBF, it does cut down on movement.

I use BBF. Don't understand why my 7D didn't come set up that way. All us old film camera guys learned topush the shutter gently all the way down, to avoid camera shake.

I've just started using BBF. It seems pretty good---when I remember it's not the shutter button anymore, but I'm too new to it to give you a better answer.

I have used BBF for years now. There is a learning curve but once you reprogram your muscle memory so it becomes second nature you will be glad you made the change. ;)

 Same here. I just started, and every time I push the shutter button halfway and nothing happens I have a moment of panic.

Even worse, my lens makes a sound but doesn't focus and i think I broke it.

Just experimented with BBF, center point only focus and continues focus on some doves in the yard and a hawk that went overhead, better, need to practice it is so high up it is not much more than a bird shaped outline, but it is pretty much in focus./

I have used BBF exclusively going back to my film days on a Canon EOS 1n body.
It's the only way to go in my view especially for sports and wildlife action.

I began using the back button two years ago and drastically improved my "keepers."

I have an even better idea. My 35mm cameras were Mirandas with the shutter button on the front. You squeezed to take a picture, less camera movement than the top right button. If they would make a body with the shutter on the front and the focus on the back so you squeezed like my old Mirandas it would be great.
