One of my fire photos (The local high school fire photo that made it front page in the paper) was picked as one of the top 5 photos of the week for this week on one of the fire websites that I belong to. Just figured I would pass this news along. Thanks to everyone who has commented on my photos.

Good job. Getting published is exciting.

Back in the early 90's I worked for a daily newspaper in upstate NY. The pay sucked big time, but seeing my photos published daily was a thrill and made it worth while.

I had uploaded this photo to that site last year not long after the fire and recieved mixed reviews from some firefighters while others thought that it was a great photo for showing some of the dangers of the job. I recieved an yesterday telling me it was featured. Funny thing is, I just put it in the photo section a day before and now it is featured already. I feel honored. The fd still doesn't know it is featured this week.

As a fire dept. Safety Officer I would be very upset with the fact the fireman does not have his face shield DOWN!

Now that looks hot, and too close for comfort.

Thanks everyone for the comments and well wishes. My friend and everyone made it out just in time and are safe. As far as the equipment fire, it was a hot and smokey fire. The face shield was not down due to the firefighter was having issues with it snagging while he was trying to get the cloth sawdust collection bags out of the machine while they were on fire. A few snagged so he raised his visor but had the SCBA on. That is one of the least serious safety issues that I caught on camera last year as I caught some serious safety issues and went to the Dept Chief with those issues to get resolved. Some of the personnel hated me for it but after a cooling off period for them and me explaining why I did it to protect them so they all go home they have since changed for the better and have since thanked me for looking out for them. Thank you for your time in the fire service 14kphotog. I appreciate it.

Being a retired Safety Manager it can be very frustrating but also very rewarding

It was a little challenging trying to photograph this scene as the pd didn't shut traffic down (so I couldn't get some of the photos that I wanted to get from the road), the heavy smoke making it hard at times to see the firefighters in the building just inside the doors of the woodshop where the fire started, a firefighter on the ladder dropping the charged hose causing it to go out of control whipping around and spraying everything in its path so I had to run for cover so I wouldn't get hit (I took cover behing an engine). In my opinion, for all of these things taken into account and to end up with one of the best of my time of fire photographer to date, I would say it is an honor to get published front page and now have the photo recognized by other emergency personnel. Thank you to everyone for helping make this possible.
