I wonder if a Nikon D 70 or D 200 can be converted to shoot IR images.

Thanks all . . .

D70 is better - easier to do.

Lifepixel does conversion. Canadian Photographer Alex Morrison is an award winning photographer with her Infrared Images. She offers IR tutorials including Nikon D-70 specific lessons. You can reach her at : alex@nature-photography-central.com

Don't buy her stuff. I got it and it came with no instructions and I wasted my money. Lifepixel and Kolarivision have tutorials on their sites. Deborah Sandidge has a good book out-Digital Infrared Photography and she teaches a course at Better photo which is very good.

Yes, I've heard good things about Lifepixel. I had a Pentax K100D (6.1MP CCD) converted to full time IR by a different company. I guess they did a good job, little to compare to. Main issues I have with the camera and it probably has nothing to directly do with the conversion per se, is when I try to set a custom white balance which you have to do for IR, the camera has a hard time auto-focusing on a plain white surface. This may be a Pentax quirk, but it seems to need an auto-focus lens to set a custom white balance. My other two newer Pentaxes (CMOS) don't seem act so weird for setting WB. The other thing that is an IR hassle is even with old lenses with an IR mark you have to refocus (manually of course).

If your conversion requires you to focus on white paper then you put your camera into manual focus. Hpw could camera focus on white paper???

Before you have one converted, give a lot of thought to what kind of filter you want installed. There are several choices.

It's not so much focusing as using white paper for white balance. When I had my D70 converted, I had to use green grass for white balance. That pretty typical.

Does the built-in IR filter block IR 100% on cameras? Is there a way to non-destructively (as in temporarily) reverse the IR-blockade that is built-in. I had heard of some Hoya filter that enables one to do that. I could have picked that incorrectly, though!

Some camera sensors are receptive to IR. For these you can leave the IR block in place add an IR filter to the lens and get your shots. With some cameras it is more work than when using a converted camera but still quite doable.

The Nikon D-70 will do this. So will the old Olympus Camedia C2020Z and others.

I had my Sony NEX 5R converted by Kolarivision. Great customer service and the conversion took less than a day.

As others have said, lifepixal has a good reputation too.
