Does anyone have any comments about the Nikon D90?
I have heard good stuff regardless of the mid range megapixels.

My D90 has been a reliable work horse for years. With built-in motor, it beautifully handles all Auto-Focus lenses equipped with with F-mount.

I've had a D90 for about 4 years, it has been a wonderful camera and takes excellent pictures. It is a workhorse and has never given any trouble at all. Unless you are making very large prints, you don't need more than the 12 mp of the D90. I'm not parting with mine even though I've also got a 24mp D610. The D90 is like a comfortable shoe, you just keep wanting to use it!

The D90 is an excellent camera.

It has been "updated" twice, first with the D7000 and currently with the D7200. Is the D7200 better than the D90? The simple answer is "yes", as listed in the snapsort D90 vs D7100 comparison. But the more important question is whether the improvements would make a difference in your photography? If your camera is not limiting you, then there may be no reason to buy a new one.

If you do feel that there are pictures you want to take but your camera cannot keep up, then it makes sense to consider a new camera. If that is the case, there is a chance that the next update, the D7200, may be announced in the next month or two.

Yes I know I know, but I am sure you meant the D7100 in the first paragraph not the D7200 ;)

Yes, thanks. You know I meant the D7100, but others may not, so the correction is good. :-)

Ol' Frank Loc: Orlando,

My d90 works just fine. I had an opportunity recently to get the d7100 but since I only print 8 x 10 or so the additional pixels really don't matter that much. Other than that, the D90 works just fine and I will consider an update when the shutter count hits 150k or so. Only has 80k now so it is just now broken in. I love it.

Thanks to everybody who responded!
I have been using a D70 since it came out and it too has been a workhorse, but it will not support what it is I want to do. I don't need a huge video file, just photos. I hike and ski a lot and weight is a concern.
Thanks again
Gary

Lighter weight camera body is why I used a D5000 (12Mp) for several years, and now a D5200 (24Mp) for my field macro-photography set-up. Combination of 105-mm macro lens + speedlight + L-grip bracket is quite heavy for hand-held, so the D5000 series allows a bit of weight saving.

The advantages of the D90 over the D5000 series is that:
1. It has a built in focus motor so you can use older AF Nikon lenses and have auto focus.
2. It has an LCD display on top where you can see the settings and more control over adjustments without having to access the menus.
3. The viewing area of the D90 is much better; it uses a penta-prisim as opposed to penta-mirror.

My son has a D5100 and I've shot quite a bit with it, but, both of us prefer the handling of the D90.
