These are really cheap (Rockwell says they've been used as body caps by some mail-order shippers) and SHARP. Much easier to focus manually than my AF
1.8 D which is as smooth as sandpaper. Talking about Nikons Series E 50mm
1.8. Great unabtrusive, feather weight, walk-about lens.

This is going back about thirty-five years or so, but I remember the Nikkor E series lenses were introduced with the less expensive consumer plasticky Nikon EM in the mid-70s. Notwithstanding their consumer orientation, the E series lenses were pretty sharp and were used by some photographers on their Nikkormats, FMs and FEs at the time.

Since only the front element was NIC coated, the E lenses lacked the contrast of Nikkors, but if one took proper care to avoid direct light striking the lens (which one should always do anyway), the image quality of most of them was not bad. I own and use quite often the 75~150 f/3.5, and am quite pleased with it's image quality. I think all elements are NIC coated, but cannot say for sure. The 28 f/2.8 E is a gem reversed for extreme close-up work.

It is not easy to find a 50mm f1.8 lens regardless of brand that will not perform well. The 50mm lens is among the best corrected of all optics.
Some of the series E lenses became an instant success like the 75-150 f3.5, a lens that found a place among professionals. I have no experience with the 50mm f1.8 but I am sure it is a very good lens for what it is.
